Or does it mean a budget increase if all cars are, in theory, worth a minimum of £2k.

Yeah, i think you must have owned the car for 12 months, and seen as the scheme only runs til next march, unless you already own the car you cant do it

Does it have to be road legal? i.e. MOT'd and stuff?

Was just trying to create a bit of debate about the impact on the shed market.

Have seen the impact on German market of similar initiative, in which "shed" sales disappeared, and lots of sale of Chevrolet Matiz (or whatever), and Dacia Cr*pmobiles have rocketed.

Not exactly the planned saving of the German car industry that was intended but there you go...

This is the key point. Just how many people with old cars worth less than £2000 go out and buy new ones? Practically none I bet. They just go and get better secondhand cars. The £2K saving isn't going to put much of a dent in depreciation on most new cars either.

It's a non story.

In this word we have a finite amount of certain resources. One of the things that may shock you to find out is in limited supply is newspaper print. This means if a newspaper prints a big long story about the scrappage scheme then less gets printed about MPs expenses.

So the main drive behind the scrappage scheme is to use up our limited resource of letters

I own a scrapper, but I can't justify a new car. If I could I'd have a nearly new car, and not a scrapper, hence this scheme can not help the motor industry.

Wow, I'm really bored of these threads already!

Anyone who owns an old car that is worth keeping in PHs opinion won't trade it in for a 5k econobox. Is Mr. MG gonna trade his MGB for a Chevrolet Matiz? Or Mr MX-5? Or Mr Fiat Coupe? Or......I think you get the idea.

This will be the motor industry in this country that is now Lotus and Jaguar/RR, so even the cheapest British built car will be the thick end of £25k.

It is nothing more than a headline to take away from the fact that they have bankrupted the country in a mere 12 years.

Surely there must have been somebody that pointed this out to those burkes when they were planning this scheme? Or are they really that retarded?

More likely it went like this :-

'How much is this going to cost us (the gov) then?'

'Nothing. No one will take it up.'

'Excellent. We can say we're doing something that sounds good, but it's free to us. Win win.'

wink
