Paint Question
Discussion
I have handed my Exige spoiler and side pods in to be painted from Satin Black to Gloss black and the paint shop have told me that I will need to be "very careful" with the lacquer on the gloss black as it will chip easilly (he went onto tell me this was due to them not being able to oven bake the parts) and they won't therefore be as strong as parts that are baked... Is this right? Anything to worry about?

Kev (T6KFR on ScottishElises) had his matt black spoiler painted gloss and I don't think he was told anything about the finish being fragile? Certainly hasn't had any issus since that I've heard of...
Just thinking aloud, but how would Lotus have painted them in the first place? Surely they would have had the same issue and I don't reckon they'd have started colour coding the 'S' at all if there was a chance the paint was going to peel off.

well known problem that without baking the coats of paints they will be more prone to chipping. Even then very few places have the facilities to "bake" the paint on at a sufficient temperature for optimal results. Cars for example would have to be completely stripped or the plastics would melt if it was in a sufficiently high temp oven. Its why in general anything that gets resprayed doesnt last as long as a factory finished piece before needing redone. Wouldn't be worried about it though, just good to hear that at least one paintshop makes their customers aware of the issue. Might also have told you that the new water based paints they'll be using are a steaming pile of dung in comparison to what used to be available but thats progress or "health and safety" at work.
Nice to hear the paintshop having good "customer service" Regarding the baking, im presuming the parts are grp or glassfibre, which distorts very easily in the oven, im sure youd rather have them back the same shape you sent them
Regarding the WB ststement, its pure myth, nothing wrong with wb once you know how to work it, its just excuses used by people who dont know how to apply it, The protection to the WB,the clear, is the same as its allways been with slightly less VOC, which doesnt affect the longevity of the repair provided its been applied to manufacturers specs.

Yup the parts are GRP!
I guess it was good of them to be honest with me. The guy could have stayed quiet, got paid for the work, sending me away not knowing any different!
I'm picking them up tonight so will let you know how they got on! The rest of the Exige has armourfend on it so that may be a good idea!!!
