Summer job - any recommendations?
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm looking to get a summer job to help pay for my camera stuff (and uni..)
I'm 16, good at photography, have got a good set of GCSEs, have had work experience in both offices and a garage, and can adapt well to different things. (prepared to do lots)
I'm based in Reigate, but can commute.
I have handed my CV round shops and no joy.. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
George

Hi George,
Have you tried any agencies? From previous summers when I was 17/18, both myself and friends had some good luck with going through an agency. I even managed to get 4 months working at a Merc dealer, although your age will probably go against you working in the car industry until you pass your test
Some other suggestions which I know people have done.
- Council work (Gardening)
- Landscape Gardening companies
- Garden Centres
- Larger DIY places such as Homebase etc... they normally take on lots of summer staff.
- Local Car wash places?
I went for some truly horrible jobs (warehouse stacking Pet food!) and didn't get them as they were looking for longer term staff, so if you concentrate on the places that really do only want someone for the summer, then you've got a much better chance of being taken on.
Good luck with the search
Dave

I'd say it was unlikely, unless you're a big fan of data entry as this makes up the bulk of temp work from when i've been looking.
That's not to say that it's impossible. What about trying one of the smaller independant PC places? They may need a hand with swapping hard drives, building customer's PC's and loading software etc.
I'd also bear in mind that sometimes it's nice to have a mix of job type on your CV, so if you're only working for a couple of months over the summer, it may actually be better to do something that you'd not look to do longer term, but would give a different dimension to your CV. Just a thought!

My daughter is in the same boat; turns 16 this summer and has been looking around for a summer job to start when she finishes
her GCSE's. Problem is that every retail job advertised at the moment gets 100's of applications from experienced adults out of work.
Interesting take on diy and garden centre type places...
PS: for those of you that know this applies to them: I have a shotgun...

I used to do casual labouring for the estates department at Reading College every summer whilst I was at uni. But then my dad does work there
Thats the sort of thing you want as it'll come back round next summer too. I was struggling to find a temporary job too before that came up for me.

If you can make it out to bagshot you could try pennyhill park hotel. We are always looking for part time staff in either conference & banqueting or in the spa. Just check out the web address conected to my profile & send your cv in. Even if you have no experience in hospitality we will give you all the training you need.
