First off, please dont move this to the tv sub forum because its more of a general question. So, at the end of the said program, the credits wizz past at hyperspeed. I've managed to read the first sentence and i'm intrigued to see what they are saying. It starts 'the footage in this program is edited in such a way that....' and i want to know the rest. Anyone know?

It's their way of saying that some of what you is scripted or edited in such a way to create tension / a storyline, but in reality didn't actually happen like that.

Like when you see Gordon outside the restaurant saying how great it is and how much he has turned it around, and the decor is the original - pre makeover - decor.

You can see where they blatantly edit different parts of the footage together to show reactions to things that are said, which didn't actually happen - ie it's being dramatised. It's very common on American TV shows and is becoming more common here.

The footage show a bunch of actors pretending to be staff and customers cause nobody it their right mind would invite 500 million people to watch how badly they run a simple yet pretentious cafe.

Kitchen Nightmares USA Script said:
TOP SECRET: NOT FOR PUBLIC

Kitchen Nightmares USA episodes will have the following storyline:

1) Gordon enters very quiet lunchtime 'restaurant' and samples a starter and main course.

2) Gordon will cleverly work out that the ingredients are not fresh and will use the words "f%cking inedible".

3) Gordon will meet the hapless owner(s) who have 'ploughed their life savings' into the business (even though they have never run a food business before).

4) The incumbant chef gets upset and the black ne'r-do-well kitchen porter steals some stuff before being sacked. Gordon will find old mouldy food in the freezer and make numerous references to nasty, not-fresh ingredients.

5) Gordons watches a chaotic evening service where the diners mysteriously seem able to wait 2.5 hours for their starter, even though 99.9% of people would already have f*cked off. The chef will appear inexperienced/lazy/crooked (delete as appropriate).

6) Gordon takes all the staff out to do a leaflet drop, meanwhile his 'team' splash some white emulsion on the walls. Staff and owners see the 'new' restaurant decor and are speechless. Crying at this point adds to dramatic effect.

7) Gordon introduces simple, fresh menu with local fresh ingredients to go with fresh decor.

8) Production team and/or extras fill first nights service, there are some hitches, but everybody loves the food and the owners think Chef Ramsey has saved their lives.

9) All the staff who thought Chef Ramsey was a cock at the beginning now think he's ace and the 'best chef in the world'

10) Repeat x 18 with different actors/sets to achieve a full season

HAHA SUCKERS
Sounds about right.

The funny thing was that on tonights episode the owner was completely the opposite of the previous episodes. He knew he was in the wrong straight away and admitted that he was a fool.

I like Ramsay and he is good at what he does, but KN USA is pure drivel (I actually like the UK version). We went to the good food show a few years ago in Brum and during a live demonstration someone asked him about KN USA and he agreed that it was more of an entertainment programme than a food show, but he enjoyed it and it paid well...

It says something like the programme is edited, not in order and some of the diners were given financial reward for visiting the restaurants...

This is such a bunch of wk. I was keeping an eye on this in the p and p ....except it's not the pie and piston anymore, and therefore any post with a title that enables it to be squirrelled away into the ether, disappears !

It says something like "the scenes you see may or may not have happened, and may or may not have happened in the order you saw them in and they may or may not have been sexed up to make the drama of the show"....

I freeze framed it on V on Demand once - it has the bit about the dodgy editing and also says that some of the customers "may have received a financial contrribution from the producers towards the cost of their meal"

Reading between the lines, people are waiting 2.5 hours for their starters because they're getting a free feed (and quite possibly being paid to be there too)

10PS missed out the bit about making everyone all scrub the kitchen. Spot on assessment though - you've seen one episode, you've seen them all!

Funnily enough a friend of mine is a chef, he hasn't seen the show. I told him what happens, and he agreed that would be what is needed. So, the basic question is

IF it really is that simple how the hell do so many places get it wrong!?!?!?!?

Most americans prefer the english version of KN.

I was on the Black pearl show that was on a few weeks ago in the UK. Having been a fan of the show in the UK I have found myself picking the program apart now I live in the US. If you watch closely you will see day and night get swapped, one service can last 3 days and shirts with pockets lose their pockets when it is meant to be straight after.

In the Black Pearl's case we seem to have been there on 2 spereate nights when in fact we were there only once. We managed to get an invite purely by luck as they were advertising on Craigslist for people to eat at a restaurant. Having an educated guess we knew it was Gordon. Before you go into the restaurant you have to sign all rights away including the right to your shadow image! They then gave us $20 each but we were expected to pay for the meal.

On entering the restaurant the producer sends you in in pairs then you are sent to the table. The producer then told us to let the production crew know before the waiting staff if we wanted to send anything back. The four of us had hoped to be there on the "after" filming but it was clear it was the "before". The reason for the micalculation was due there being several services filmed before and after but they appear to be only one before and after on the show. Our plan was to eat quickly and not say much and get out so that we would not be on TV.

Once sat down the producer told us to talk only about the food when the cameras were near and not to look in the camera. Around us were people who had obviously thought this would be their big break in tv (I should have mentioned this is NY) so they turned up in prom dresses and atempted to give a full review of the food but they had no idea of what they were talking about.

So..... The drinks start to flow and the first course comes out. I have lobster bisque which was not vile but a bit crap. All ok so far though and no cameras. Second course comes out and one of the prawn (shrimp) dishes is not served at the same time. My wife cuts into her shrimp and it is raw. Quite an accomplishment considering the outside was fried. This is where things went down hill and our plan was out of the window.

As instructed, I mentioned to the producer that we had an issue with the food. from this point on I had 2 cameras on me until I left. The owner came over and appologised and gave us yet more alcohol. The camera crews had individual pictures of us attached to each camera! It was obvious we were on the radar and I am not totally convinced it was a mistake to give us under cooked food. I spoke to a camera man in the bathroom about this but he would not give any info. He did however wonder where his life had gone so wrong as his plan was always to do films and not hide in toilets until he got called.

The wife's food gets sent back and comes back, cooked, complete with pube! Again, the alcohol is constant and quick so we are all quite drunk. The weasel owner came over to talk to us again and I mentioned his restaurant's atempt on our lives and other such dramatic drunken rants such as quality better in a Canadian Subway. (This is true and I would recomend the lobster sandwich in a canadian subway.) I then said "I am not going to pay......" I was going to finish with "for the food" but he cut me off and everything was free. We must have had a couple of hundred dollars of alcohol which we did not pay for.

Interestingly we spoke to the waiter who mentioned that normally there was no food issues and he was suspisious about our issues. However, when it was shown on TV they focused on the 3 managers and not soo much the food and I managed to not be on TV for more than a couple of minutes total. (with subtitles, not sure if that was due to the English accent or the slurring of the words)

Also, we saw Gordon but he never came over so I think the tone of the final edit had been decided so he did not have to worry about food issues. Black Pearl had its final night of service the day KN aired here in the US. I had not told many people about being at the filming as I had just got promoted and did not want to draw attention. I did not need to tell anyone as I was getting messages for days about it. Then, they show it in the UK and I get another set!

All good fun but the wife left hungry!
