Hello Fella's

Been a lurker for some time so my first post for help please.I have read other posts about pumps on this forum but can anyone clarify my issue?
I have bought a 350i which has been in storage for about 4 years.
Drained the tank and put about two cans of fuel in before starting. It has been running fine just moving up and down the drive to carry out work.Started & moved it the other day and would not restart.Disconnected fuel hose and cranked over.No fuel coming up.Disconneted the pipe at the pump and turned over.Nothing coming through, although I can feel the pump pulsing. There is no pre filter fitted. Is it safe to assume the pump could be blocked up?There are replacement pumps on ebay for £46 has anyone bought one ,any good etc
Thanks
Paul

Sounds like the pump has seized or jammed. You could try reversing the terminals for a moment to see whether it will clear, but if it's getting lumps of rust in there from the tank then you're going to be in trouble until you sort the tank out.

you may want to get a pre-filter, else your new one will not last long.
you could break it in a day, if the tank is very rusty.

Give this guy a ring.
http://www.fastroadcars.co.uk
He's a very nice guy, but I forgot his name.
you can tell him I told you to call him.
He does the Ali sytec pre-filters (you will want one with a brass mesh pre-filter) if you fit one of these, it will make you pump last much longer. (also is a must if you have an Ali swirl pot (as these don't have a pre-filter)
Also a must if your swirl pot rattles, (as this means your pre-filter has come loose)

Just tell him the fitting you want on the and he will supply what ever you need.

Hi,
Could do with a bit of help also. My car has not been run since 2002. Put a prefilter in before the fuel pump. The pump was u/s so purchased one off the internet for £42... Installed it in the car started, fantastic noise and big smiles until I noticed the fuel pump was leaking. Did a load of checks and the pump leaks between the out metal canister and the black plastic with the HP outlet on. Gutted.

The guy I got it from was good and sent me another. Put it on today and the car started and then leaked. Hmmm, two new pumps both leaking. Took it off plugged both ends and with just the pressure of the fuel evaporating in the pump (was in the sun) made it bubble around the same place. Was very careful fitting the mount, no overtightening to distort the canister.
Been trying to find one today I can pick up locally. The landrover dealer in Chelmsford can get a Bosch fuel pump for the old rangerover which was externally mounted, part number PRC 3901 (568189)

I'm after any info which may help me identify the pump or pumps which will be suitable for a 350i, so I can order and pick/up at local supplier ... can also take back if problem.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks BBT.

there are a lot of people having pump problems this year.I have a Jaguar XJS pump on mine now after sufering from leakage in the same place as you have.
Do be careful fitting other pumps though as the terminals can be marked up differently and with different sized spade fittings

Could you get aquarium silicone sealer to attach itself if the area were thoroughly de-greased ?

- Not sure how petrol-proof it is. scratchchin

It's very strong and flexible though.

I bought my fuel pump from TVR carparts.com who were very helpful, as ferlin says be careful when reconnecting the terminals as they are sometimes the opposite size to the pump that you have taken off

Thanks for the feedback.
It's playing on my mind at the moment, could there be anything elese which would cause two new pumps to fail. Could the fuel pressure regulator be to blame. I read the pump has some kind of over internal over pressure protection.
Worried abut buying another pump and having the same problem ... no way around it really have to keep plugging away.
I'll do a search in the forum to see if its been reported before.
Regards,
BBT.

You can soon check the fuel pressure: obtain a small pressure gauge scaled say 0-5 Bar (could be a gas gauge, it'll still work), Disconnect the fuel line from the cold start injector and plumb your gauge in there.
Remove air hose from airflow meter and with ignition on, poke two fingers in the airflow meter to lift the flap and start the pump. If the gauge goes off the scale you have a problem smile Seriously, you should have about 2.8 Bar (say 40psi-ish).
Pressure regulators rarely fail stuck closed (ie over-pressure), they usually leak or suffer split diaphragms causing the fuel pressure to drop (or spray all over the engine bay).

Are you sure you have a fine mesh pre-filter. you can't have a micro filter, as it will not flow enough need to be a free flow filter. but you must have a working filter. your need a micro filter after to protect the injectors.

Ahh, no I don't have a fine mesh filter but one is now on the way, along with a Sytec FP603 fuel pump.
Will get around to checking the FPR this weekend with a gauge. Suspect there is a problem as I pulled the tank return fuel pipe off the FPR, turned the motor over and didn't get any fuel release. Was expecting something but was dry as a bone.
Thanks for the replies,
BBT.

I got one of those cheap ebay jobs and found that it was wired backwards and also didn't flow as much as the original pump. Now I'm using an 044 pump that flows twice as much as the OEM ones, and cost less than was being asked for the authentic oem pumps.

I got two of the pumps from Simonbbc and fitted with the pre-filter as described.....

No problems...

I can't speak for anyone else but my 350i is running sweet now and the off-roader is the same, the ad does say new stock.
Anyway I thought I would put my 2pence worth in

I bought my Bosch pump fro RT racing a couple of years ago but had problems finding a suitable electrical connector as the pump just had straight spigots within plastic shrouds(yellow one side black the other),bullet connectors didnt fit securely but in the end found a connector to do the job and be water proof.I believe the pump is off the sierra cosworth after cross reference with numbers on pump with info on google!confused
