Discovery 3 - how happy ?
Discussion
I'm needing a larger vehiicle. 3 large dogs and my first child have really pushed the limits of my 3 series touring. To add to it i'm also finding problems with my back which i think is partly due to getting my large frame in and out of the 3 series.
I've been to a dealer and had a look at a new shape X5 which i like but the only other vehicle i think that might work is a Discovery 3..
I'd just like to know from people running them ,what they like about them ,and what they don't.
Is there a model that has a good set of standard equipment ,whats the running costs like would be helpful too?
Regards

www.disco3.co.uk is a great site for info/help/ problem fixes.
Buy one as new as poss,SE or HSE has all the kit you'll ever need.Ours is 18 months old, done 30,000 miles ( 2 very minor probs only)at the moment as three bikes in the back ready for Halfords, last week had 6 adults on a night out,did the skip run,and 6 kids+one adult on the school run. I hated the idea when the wife wanted one, but I'm totally converted. A quiet smooth luxurious, comfy waftmobile, van and bus all rolled into one.

Very happy with ours. Plenty of space and very comfy.
Make sure you get the auto, it only comes with a 2.7 TDV6. Get the top if the range models SE or HSE. Expect 25MPG average, £400 a service and £400 road tax a year.
Other than that with a LR warranty you won't have an an issue as long as you avoid the early ones.

Buy good HSE (from dealer) and put the rest towards another fine toy.
i have a 2005 with 65k on it and it never missed a beat. i use this to tow, also used in quarries and building sites as well as regular 'proper off roading' around farmland.
it is a fantastic family car which will easily accomadate 7 adults on long journey's and the air suspension gives it limo like ride comfort. its also well equiped in se spec with leather and auto being the only way you would have one, and it also doubles as an executive car which can be parked outside any hotel anywhere in the country, blending in with the best of them.
its three cars for the price of one, a workhorse, an MPV, and a luxury limo! go ahead and buy.

I work for a Land Rover dealer, we get very few major problems with them now to be honest. Early ones had electical probs and you get suspension issues, but in 5 yrs of using them almost daily i have not had one break down on me.
Oh, did break the rear lower boot surround on one during sex though

Christ, how many people were involved then?!Oh, did break the rear lower boot surround on one during sex though
.Wife has had a D3 for nearly 2 years. No probs except for a broken rear hatch opening switch. Fixed under warranty.
I cant think of a car that would make a better family vehicle. MPG not too bad, great mile muncher, amazing off road capability, perf pretty good....
Prices dropped massively a few months ago but have been on the up for the last few months.

I've not long swapped to a 2008 D3 SE for the family bus and it's superb.
Very comfy, very quiet, get an SE or HSE and you've got everything you want, for me the HSE didn't do anything more for me so the SE was perfect.
Downsides - It's not quick!

Enjoy the car, don't try and shag the car!
