About an hour ago I went fishing in the river 300 yards from home. Within 10 minutes I had a 1lb Brown Trout in my swag bag and 30 minutes after that it was eaten*.

Anyone beat that in catching and eating?

*gutted and filleted, a bit of fresh lemon juice and some knobs of butter, seasoned, then grilled skin side down for 3 or 4 minutes. Served with wild mushrooms sauted in butter with chopped spring onions.

St George's mushrooms - Tricholoma gambosum - appear on or shortly after St George's Day (hence the name), though I've never found them. irked

Have eaten raw deer liver out of a red deer carcas within a couple of minutes of being shot. Also tried a little fish I caught in Naples within a few seconds of being caught, wasn't very nice though!

Well not exactly "catching" but collected oysters, mussels and razor clams in Skye. Eaten immediately! (well we cook them first) yum

Also caught mackerel and saithe (pollock) which gets eaten fast.

Oh and scallops (only on certain tides), eaten doubly fast! lick

I think I can. There are some quiet areas a short way up the River Stour from it's mouth to the sea, where sea bass school.

Took a picnic and bbq along to the 'beach' alongside the river. Told the kids to get the BBQ lit and up to temp. OH looked on quizzically - "are you sure we should light it before we actually have any fish?".

Oh she of little faith!

When it was up to temp, a short cast, wait 60 seconds and the rod tip starts to go. One after the other, nice young bass - about 12" long - caught, gutted and straight on the BBQ.

Yum!

Given that all six (out of six caught) were eaten and the thousands of tonnes of fish which are trawled and then thrown back dead each year, I really couldn't give a damn.

i'm not sure that eating a declining fish species before it reaches spawning age is a appropriate way to respond to irresponsible commercial fishing, but obviously you would disagree!

I don't entirely disagree and if out fishing under normal circumstances will always return undersize catches. But this was just a family day out and, in any case, have you tried getting a 4lb bass on a disposable BBQ? biggrin

yeah don't worry, I wasn't trying to start a fight!

And with a 4lb Bass, why bother with the BBQ. Soy sauce and wasabi only???

New favourite for me is when out walking with the girlfriend (who introduced me to this) is forraging.

Wild Garlick picked, and only 20 minutes later then used in a butter sauce on a fresh steak is cloud9

If you would care to embellish a Bournemouth boy with your location that would be much appreciated.

My anecdote was about 9 years ago - this was the place though.

Whilst I can't beat either the spider-eater or 10PS in terms of freshness and time-to-plate, I have got this little piggy growing in the back garden of a mate's house....

It's a Berkshire rare breed, and I know its provenance and exactly what it's being fed on. Last night it had a supper of mango's, pineapple, and other fruits to supplement its daily feed... yum

At the weekend I poached an egg that was straight from a hen and still wet/warm. I reckon hen to plate in a shade over 5min's (3½ was cooking)
