E46 PDC faulty?
Discussion
Hi Chaps,
Just bought a 330i Sport 2001 and when selecting reverse i get a looooooooooooooong beep from the PDC system and then nothing. I've read that the sensors should click if you listen to them but none of mine do with ignition at 2 and in reverse. I did disconnect/reconnect the control unit in the offside wing beneath the carpet but still no joy. Any ideas? anyone experienced this before? Any other way of testing?

I had a similar problem on my E46 where it was only working occasionally (and the rest of the time, the long bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep you describe when engaging reverse). Was like it since I bought it, and was annoying me.
I crawled under the rear of the car and found that the wiring to one of the sensors was damaged.
The wiring to each sensor unplugs (I think there's something you squeeze to release). So I unplugged the damaged wiring from the sensor, and soldered up the broken wire. Then taped it up with electrical tape, and reconnected.
Its been fine since then.
Don't know how it got damaged... its pretty well protected under there. Wondered whether perhaps it had been nibbled by a squirrel, but it was also quite near the exhaust so maybe it was heat damage?
Might be worth checking your wiring?

Unless we've got different bumpers (mine's a coupe), the middle two are quite easy to see from under the rear of the car. I gave the wires a tug and found that one was broken.
However, I couldn't check the outside two because they are well hidden. I suspect that either the bumper needs to come off, or the strip in which the parking sensors are mounted.
Luckily in my case it was one of the easy to locate sensors.
Cheers,
Steve.

Hi,
No, I've never heard mine make any noise.
I think that once its decided its faulty, it stays that way until you next turn the car on and off. So perhaps its realised a sensor is down or disconnected and has shut down the entire system? I think this is what happened with mine.
