It might not actually be Photoshop, but I'll ask anyway.

I'd like to create the equivalent of this, but have my own text in it. How would I go about it?

Short and sweet approach (for me and then find out that it's not that short)..

It's due to layers...

Couple of boxes, add some shadow.
Type your text. Add some shadow or duplicate the text and slightly shift modifying the lower lever to change the colour to what you suit.

Draw your character on a separate image.

Pull that one into the text image and then using Image scale place it where you want it.

Mask the letter that you want the character to pop out of. Move the mask to the Character layer and chop off the bit you don't want.

Job done I would have thought, although it may end up looking as rough as a badgers butt.

You're better off doing something like this in Illustrator or CorelDraw....

Photoshop is probably capable of this but not in a vector format so you'd be limited right from the start.

Actually photoshop has some good vector tools - masks, layer styles etc., especially CS3 which has 'smart filters' (i.e. the filter is like an adjustment layer, so not exactly vector but scalable anyway). admittedly illustrator would probably be easier for this but the gap between them is closing.

Try Corel Draw. A very underrated yet incredibly powerful piece of software. In it's heyday, CorelDraw was the industry standard and I love using it simply because it was my first drawing package having used it since version 3 back in 1992! smile

Why not save yourself some time and hassle and just tell us what you're looking for and let someone else do it for you?

I'd rather have a go myself really, from what I've tried it's not the easiest thing to do and I wouldnt want to impose

If you can master layers and masks, something like that should be quite easy.

Similar approach to produce this, which was all done using layers and masks.
