Hello!

Wife's birthday next week, need a place to take her, and some other family, out to eat. Can't give away too much as wifey is a PHer, but we need to be fairly close to Reading Station if pos.

Four adults, and we'll have our 7 month old with us, so no uber posh places.

Aiming for perhaps £20permain as an upper limit?

Sorry if this is vague.

Any ideas?

-a.

It's OK....nothing great.

There are far better places. One sticks in my head but I can't remember for the life of me the name. Give me a mo while I look it up on Google Maps....

Update! I got the name of the place!

L'Ortolan. It's a Michelin star restaurant and it's excellent...

Ooh - now you're talking. - not the cheapest though, but might be worth the extra £.

Have a look on this website..

http://www.foodanddrinkguides.co.uk/

I have the Berkshire edition which covers Fine dining to Gastropubs.

Quite a few places out towards Goring or out towards Newbury

The Crab @ Chievely
The Miller of mansfield @ Goring
The Winning hand on A4 towards Aldermaston

Or have a look in the recommendations section at the top of Food & Drink.

www.myalacarte.co.uk - Yasmina from Apprentice's restaurant.

Almost entirely all sourced from Southern England and fantastic food. This place has only recently opened and has usurped London St Brasserie.

Ignore the comments/thoughts about the food she prepared in the Apprentice.

Excellent restaurant went there just before Christmas and it was fabulous - The Sprinfield Estate whole berry Cab Sauv is a must if you have red meat.

The lunch set menus are pretty good value too.

Unfortunately not near the station, but a good place nevertheless, is the Bull Inn on the High Street at Sonning, 01189 693901.

There's a Fried chicken place opposite the station! wink Not sure why but I've never really eaten out in my home town but if you and your wife like a really good curry, there is a particularly nice Nepalese in London Street (The KhuKuri 82 London Street, RG1 4SJ).

Its a bit of a stroll from the station but not too far.

I'll second that, I'm not sure if it was just as we had the 'cheap' menu but I wasn't impressed. You could always head down the M4 to Bray if you fancy a short(ish) drive.

There's a restaurant in Malmaison which seemed pretty reasonable when I went to a birthday meal there. It's pretty much as close to the station as you can get as well.

Thanks, looks like one to cross off the list!

It's only the cheap menu you should avoid - never felt it provided a value-for-money meal. The cheap menu at myalacarte on the other hand, is excellent.
