I'm going to do this qualification, has anyone got any recommendations for a course provider, any stories of what to avoid/look for and any thoughts on teaching English abroad?

Cheers! smile

I think the value of the qualification depends on the body who award it. If I remember correctly, there are 2 main bodies who are internationally accepted, I'll try and dig out the names for you.
With regards to working, what are you intending to do/where do you want to go??

Working in a formal international school with children will require the top notch qualifications and probably some relevant experience too. On the other hand if you want to just work in a language school, the requirements are less strict. I studied in Valencia, and there were many English language schools there that would have employed me solely due to the fact that English is my mother tongue, for conversation classes if nothing else.

Both, thanks so much. Chunky - email sent, thank you smile

Bec, we're being posted to Oman early next year and I'd like to teach in a language school rather than with children.

I have a Masters. I've also worked in tertiary education for 10 years at higher lecturer level although with no face to face teaching, so I suspect that none of that will be relevant.

Names of institutions would be useful. Can I ask what your background is in this area?

A load of my mates went to Japan doing the TEFL, they did it for a year and had a great time.

another one of my mates has just come back after two months as the agency who sorted out the which school you go to had an under subscribed school, it went bankrupt and he had no job and nowhere to live and no money. He had to get his parents to transfer the cost of his flight into his account so he could get back home, he spent his last night in in Tokyo in Mcdonalds sleeping... biggrin How I laughed when I should have been offering support and condolence...

I've been racking my brains, and the internet, and this is the best starting point:
http://www.britishcouncil.org/teacherrecruitment-t...

The two most widely accepted certificates are awarded by Cambridge and Trinity.

My background in all this is through my Mum, who has done some TEFL training (she works as a learning support assistant in a British school in the Netherlands) and she got as far as researching possible courses before circumstances changed and she wasn't able to take a course. Having studied modern languages myself at university, TEFL was also something that was a possible career option for me, but I chose the big bad world of business instead!

My girlfriend did the online course as well as the on-site time in London.

She thought it was great, and learned a lot. But then, she isn't English.

Some real hard material in there though!

Right, I've found cactustefl.com that seems very useful, I think I'll register through them. I really need to do the full-time course which is going to prove impossible while I'm working here - so I may do the online study first with weekends when and as and try to do a full-time course once posted.

Any other experiences of doing the course/working overseas teaching English much appreciated.

The Ben - I'll make sure to not tell you when I'm destitute tongue out
