PLEASE do not move to the 'Rockclimbing and Rappelling' forum.

Anyway, you want to descend a 50 metre cliff, and retrieve your rope from the bottom (of the cliff that is). You have two 50 metre lengths of rope so you tie them together and loop them around your top anchor point and throw the ends over the side. But hold! Your descender device does not like double ropes and neither do you. So how can you decend one rope and still retrieve it from the bottom?

What on earth are you using as a descender? Yes, there is a knot you can use although I've never had the ballsbiggrin Or just get a mate to descend the other rope at the same time.

Two options.

1. Use both ropes through a figure of 8. Should work fine.

2. Tie a big knot in the ropes that won't pass through the top anchor. this gives you one rope that snags and one that is free. Ab down the snagging rope then pull it down with the free one.

A suicide knot I think it's called - was on one of the Bear Grylls shows. It only remains knotted as long as there is tension on the rope.

Figure eight thingy. I am pretty much self-taught at this so may be getting it wrong.

Get yourself an ATC - it takes a double rope happily and is smoother than a figure of 8.

Judging by how well you're doing so far, lessons seem wise.

Haha. You are of course correct. But where's the fun in that?

^^ What he said in point 2 is called a pull through. Depending on what you rig from, it could cause damage to the rope when you pull it through. Or, as more than likely will be the case, damage to the swear filter when you post about how the friction wouldn't let you pull it through...

Please make sure you know what you're doing though, else it will be one bloody fast ride to the bottom! hehe

A word of caution, unless you know what your doing (in fact unless you know what your doing you shouldn't try abseiling anyway TBH), you really shouldn't abseil from a single anchor.

Speaking as someone who's been in the back of an air ambulance due to an anchor failing, you REALLY don't want it to happen.

Can I ask why/what exactly your trying to do? I might be able to offer a better option.

ETA Oh and ALWAYS tie a stopper knot/s in the end of your rope. You'd be amazed how often this doesn't happen.
