We have been looking at things in too complicated a fashion; Chavs, layabouts, gangsters, etc. have all missed out on something. A good breaking down and proper building up by a true-to-life Sergeant Major! Nothing more complicated than that. All of the PHDs and academics can pontificate until the cows come home about the complex troubles facing the youth of today. The mis-step is that they overlook the obvious....these youngsters need a proper breaking in. Even puppies stop peeing on the rug when popped on the nose with a newspaper. All of this deeply investigated complexity of misguided youth started about the time that youngsters began gliding through life life without consequences. Now, those of you who have experienced this in some fashion or the other (from Sergeant Major or Father) understand where I am coming from. Those of you who don't probably fall into the catergory of those who need to experience the former.
Any fallacy in anything contained wthin this post can be directly attributed to two bottles of Yellowtail Merlot. Carry on! biggrin

I actually like Fosters paperbag

What are the popular beers down under, I've been told local district beers are the preferred stuff over the more well known names but never found out for sure

Ahh, beer sociology. My favourite form of sociology.

In NSW it's pretty even between Tooheys New and Carlton Draught as everyday swill, and I argue it is just that. Swill. Very bland, generic beer.

In Victoria it's generally Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught.

Queenslanders drink XXXX, so named because it taste like xxxx

Tasmania and South Australia have the best local beers (Boags and Cascade in Tas, Coopers in SA)

In the Northern Territory they drink metho and petrol

WA I'm not sure.

Plenty of smaller brewers as well and prestige labels. James Squire do a nice range, Gage Road make some cracking stuff, so do Little Creatures and plenty of even smaller stuff.

European and Asian lagers are also pretty common. And an interesting side note, Stella is considered an upmarket, prestigious beer here.

Me? I vary between Coopers Pale (bottle fermented, very nice), Peroni and Asahi as my choices.

WA = James Squires' and Little Creatures.

Best = Boags' Premium (the slightly posher one) - nice and crisp.

Coopers' Red is also good but gets me smashed! :0)

ONLY on PH can this have turned to a discussion about beers wink (Return to old P&P, anyone?)

I'm in general agreement with OP on this. A short while back I was singing the praises and possibilities of conscription with colleagues at work. Opinion was clearly divided into two groups: the chavs... and the rest of us.

Still plenty of chavs in Greece and they still have NS.

But yes, it would be a start.

Steinlager is not a bad drop at all.

Also Boags St George as a nice summer beer.

Isn't this just the main argument for National Service?

I.e. those chavs who think they are "hard" will soon get a beasting from the RSM and broken into small pieces before being made into a man.....

But discipline needs to start with parents, and be enforced in schools...Whilst children are learning right from wrong..

You are right of course. The artificial veil of optimism and simplicity that was last night's wine, has been lifted. frown

Some people are just tts though, by the time they'll be 18 or 19 it'll be too late to change them. Once they've done national service they'll be tts who can use guns and have combat survival techniques. I agree with you that discipline needs to start from a young age.

It does, which then gives us the very real problem of what to do with all the poor out of work socialites that seem to cater for 95% of Her Maj's populous.

Whoever banned smacking, needs a damn good kicking.

How ironic, given your Name..

Jim, ah well, lots of ideas seem great after a bevvy or two, after all, we've all spent time in the pub with mates putting the world to rights...
