Listen, you always hear the bad news before any good news. I've had a new speed 6 since Sept 01, it's been through its first service and done a few hundred miles since. Not one single problem! Don't be put off by the doom and gloom entries. Yes, the older models have had problems, but new/newer models are much more reliable, as admitted by the mechanic who did my service. I read all these horror stories but still bought one. It is the best thing I've ever done and would have regretted it for the rest of my life if I had heeded what I read on this site. As a caveat though, ALL makes and brands of cars will have problems, but too many people dwell on the image of TVR of old. Take my advice, get one - though preferably new and totally enjoy.

Just seen this thread with reference to my car woes.
The engine was actually offically out of warranty and at first, I was told that I would have to pay for everything to be fixed on the car.
After much begging by me, my dealer finally called TVR who said that they would agree to fix the engine for free (Good for TVR!). My dealer told me that I would have to pay for the removal and shippage of the engine though. At this point I was just hugely relieved not to be paying the estimated £3-5k and accepted the offer.
However, after reading up about the problem that had happened with my car and talking to other owners and dealers,it seems that this valve problem with the Speed Six engine is very common. (E,G Martin Hunts 3rd rebuild in 7 months thread today !). In fact it seems to be a known manufacturing fault !
After speaking to other owners as well it appears that I was the only one being asked to pay anything at all towards the cost of repair of this specific problem, whether or not the engines were in or out of warranty.
I challenged my dealer about this and they said that they were doing what they were instructed to do by TVR.
So I called TVR who said "I don't know why you're having to pay anything for this, if your dealer had sent the whole car to us then we would have fixed everything for free !"
To cut a very long story short, the dealer pointed the finger at TVR and TVR pointed the finger at the dealer and I got landed with a very large bill and lost my car for 9 weeks !
I have tried everything to get this resolved but TVR will NOT respond to any of my attempts to contact them.
They won't even tell me what they've done to my engine to fix the problem.
I'm not a happy bunny !

Bandit bad news; department of trading standards able to offer any extra weight to your calls???? (not sure if that's realistic - anyone??). But oh dear TVR yet again they (and yes other cars manufactures as well - no restarting old threads) manage to produce stunning bespoke cars but fail in customer service - when will companies learn it's much cheaper to keep a customer than go look for new ones; end of whinge. I have now squashed my soap box!!

I might be wrong, but I wonder what would constitute Goods fit for Purpose with regards to an engine, I would have thought anything less than 20k miles or so on a road going car would not be fit for purpose, and as such could you get a new one FOC or your money back using the Sale of Goods act?? Depends how old the car is etc. though.. less than 1yr old should be covered I would have hoped
