I've finally got round to changing my starter for one that doesn't screech.

I've also found the cause for all the screeching problems and need to find a source for some parts.

Anyone have any ideas?

try TT Tim,

he sourced some solenoids form the states last year so may be able to advise on other parts

What are you after?

I, as Jes has said, sourced some Tilton solenoids from the US but that's all, I can dig out the details of where I got them it it would help?

Yellow Peril's other half Ray has just bought a business that refurbs starter motors. That might be a possibility.

Hi Ridds, I've got a spare starter - it came with the car (not on the car) so I guess it doesn't work (but don't know) you're welcome to it if you can strip it and use it for parts.

Croydon.

Cheers for the offer Donny.

My plan is to fix this one and see if I can do a cheap repair for us all.

Many people suffer from the dreaded screech and I think I can sort if for a few quid rather than the £250 for an exchange unit.

I've found a place that con supply the parts and they are on their way to me now.

Hi all, looking for the soliniod part number for a fellow PHer i can source the solinoids fairly cheaply and my friend (Hunters Auto Electrics) is happy to sort out a mail order for you all if you want. All we need is an old one or confirmation of the part.
He got one for me 18 months ago and it has been great since. If you can help me to help you that would help us all. If you have any old starters lying around do not throw the solinoids away because even these can be refubished, as it is possibly the casing of the solinoid that is becoming rarer.

Brise list a TVR v8 starter - they don't say what it's for though.

That's handy, that's about what I paid from the US and that was before the exchange rate turned to poo!

Ordered a solenoid from wood autos, from the above link, as you can see from the photo its not the same bit as the solenoid I have just taken off my starter, new one on the right, my old broken one on the left. The part number from the link is SND 1769.

What exactly do you think causes the dreaded screeching?
