Nissan Sunny - Gearbox

Hi all

Im lookin for a CHEAP but reliable run-around and have seen a 1.4 - 1990 Nissan Sunny with 12 month ticket for a measly £200. Owner says it sometimes jumps out of 2nd and 4th gears. Her has been driving it for 7 month like this with no problem.

The body is excellent, no rot and not a dent on it, interior is pretty much the same.

What do think the problem is and is it worth buying?

Gearboxes are one of the few crap things in Sunnys. Normally they just crunch into 2nd when cold, but it sounds like that one is completely worn out.
Only really worth it if you're prepared to throw a used 'box in yourself or willing to hand over more than the car's worth to have someone do it for you.
Other than that they are amazingly reliable cars.

If it's not rotten I could be a good deal. A box will cost you £100 off ebay, if you pay someone to fit it probably add another £150 and you can get a year or 2 of cheap motoring. You need to negotiate a bit, nobody is paying £200 for car that needs new box right now but in 1 year it will be worth a couple of grand to you remember!

Noi, because the Scrappage deal only runs for 11 months to prevent that. Besides, the trade reckon all £300,000,000 allocated for it will be gone by September. Glad I got in there (with my Sunny) last week!
