Just back from a motorway journey and both my wife and I nearly froze in the S1(with the roof on).
There was heat in the dash from the heater rad but none of it wanted to join us, especially on our feet.
The heater rad gets hot but the heat stays there. There are no ducting pipes and by the look of it there never was any just short sqaure pastic vents.
The fan does not work and I this I know is crucial although I hoped some heat could get out.
Before I remove the dash, to get the fan out, will it be worth the effort.
Does anyone have an S1 which has a heater fan that works. If so is it effective?
I know the later models ,S2 onwards have ducting pipe and I have heard rumours of an S4 with a Sauna.

The only other thing is to get thermal socks

I did 70 miles today, just because I haven't been out in the S for 6 weeks or so. Roof off, hat & gloves on, frost on road, freezing fog - superb.

Does the S have a heater then?

The heater has no ram effect from incoming air and so without the fan on it will do nothing. (except heat the dash a bit) If you are going to drive around in the winter then you will need to fix your fan ASAP.

Hope that helps,

Z.

Fan works fine on '88 S1 and the output through the dash to screen vents is plentiful and nice and hot, so eventually warms the cabin up. Never been able to get anything above luke warm out of the other dash to cabin vents though, and it never gets to the feet.

I would say fixing the fan is worth it.

Heater on my S used to be superb until the dash was taken apart to sort a dodgy windscreen replacement. Now its fecking useless.. I think someone forgot to reattach something.

So, fleece lining just been zipped into my normal raincoat and extra gloves for me while I drive to and from Leeds for the next couple of months..

I have the same problem with my S1, the fan has packed up, it did work a bit, but made a loud clunk and no heat again. The heat never reached my feet though, as you say no ducts to toes's. I don't really want to take the dash off and so I'm going to buy a small car ceramic heater that will plug into cig socket, they cost £17.99 I think.

Both my windscreen and inside vents worked fine during both hot and cold weather earlier this year (the cold air was a gotsend during the trip to Le Mans)

However, something has changed asnow I've only got windscreen vents now, even when the controls are set to the inside setting.

Something must have broken along the way, must get around to finding out what..

Something I discovered some years ago when I thought the heating had 'died' was that the air tubing to the dash vents had rotted and there were several splits. Not enough to feel a jet of air but enough to make you think that the heater had no effect.
Another problem was that on the S1 there is no downwards ducting. The air seems to come 'through' the covers at the side of the tunnel. Of course the covering had come unstuck around the edges of these and the available air passages were almost totally blocked.
