So far it has been in Central America and the Caribbean! Today LBC News in London reported "The South American Country". It is just basic elementary geography, Mexico is in North America, every schoolboy knows this, why don't the news channels!

The group of countries located in the connection betrween the large continents of North America and South America have always been referred to as being in Central America. These countries are Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama. In more recent years, Mexico has tried to have itself recategorised as being North American - but I think that is nore from an economic and political wish fulfillment point of view than anything else.

To be honest, the situation of Mexico is a bit arbitary as there is no doubt that at the north end of the country, it is definitely connected to the North American continent (the USA) but the southern end is firmly placed in "Central" America.

It definitely isn't in South America.

The easiest way out is to refer to it as Latin America (although they don't speak Latin in Latin America, do they).

The United Mexican States, commonly known as Mexico is a federal constitutional republic in North America. It is bordered on the north by the United States; on the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; on the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and on the east by the Gulf of Mexico.

Covering almost 2 million square kilometres, Mexico is the fifth-largest country in the Americas by total area and the 14th largest independent nation in the world. With an estimated population of 109 million, it is the 11th most populous country. Mexico is a federation comprising thirty-one states and a Federal District, the capital city.

Only 7 continents on the Earth. Central America is not one of them.

A somewhat arbitrary decision since Europe and Asia could be, and sometimes are, viewed as the single continent 'Eurasia'.

There is not a hard and fast definition. As I said, you will see it referred to as both a North American and Central American country. Culturally, it is so different to the US and Canada that it really does belong in the Spanish/Portugeuse speaking division of the Americas.

However, LBC are wrong to refer to it as "South American".

I say North America. I'd also go with part of it (the Yucatan) being Caribbean.

I'm rather amused by the couple of posts about how different Mexico is to the US. In some parts of the US, you'd think you were still in Mexico!
