Well today, I did the first ever bit of spannering to my S3 and it was such good fun. The plan was to replace the front discs and pads. I was bought a pretty comprehensive socket set, spanner set and other useful bits for my birthday by ehasler last year, but so far they have remained virginal. Well not any more. I popped the cherry well and truly today. Even went so far as to buy myself the Haynes Ford Sierra V6 manual and a torque wrench yesterday in preparation (was surprised to find that The Bible didn't include torque settings).
Ed and I set up base downstairs in the underground car park and with Ed bringing axle stands, a jack, copper grease, brake cleaner, a rubber hammer (which he could use to bop me on the head with if I wasn't concentrating) and a cool brake tool thing to push the brake pistons apart when off the disc, we were set.....
Ed even made bacon sarnies for half time! I got stuck in and with a few handy hints and a bit of brute force from Ed, we managed to do the whole job in a couple of hours. I know that sounds slow, but for my first time I'm pretty chuffed with it. Got absolutely filthy, but loved every minute of it and will be coming back for more next weekend.
I thoroughly recommend being a spanner monkey, I've learnt a lot today and it makes me understand the car better and helps me feel confident about fixing things that go wrong. Or maybe I'm just strange.....
