Seems cheap. Get it checked out by somebody who knows the brand/model. Chassis repair would add £1500 to £3000 to the initial cost. Engine rebuild from £3000 to £6500.

Annual maintenance costs are about £3000.

They are great fun but you must be able to afford the repair/maintenance costs or you will find the ownership experience a trial rather than a pleasure.

It could be lovely, once you've had it checked over by someone who knows them, like Rob Ingleby (findasportscar.co.uk)(other experts are available), it then becomes a bit of a lottery. Some are great, some cause strife.

Bear in mind that in 1998 TVR changed the clutch and bellhousing. Check if this car's has been replaced recently; If not, you'll likely have to get it done, and that means a new flywheel with the clutch plus a bit of machining of the bolts that hold the clutch in.

Not terribly difficult or expensive, but just a hassle if unexpected.

Also check the power steering is OK, the little Woodruff key at the end of the pump shaft was a bit of a weakling up to about 98-99 and they sometimes snap prematurely, which is a pig to fix.

On my old '98 Cerb I went down the oft-trodden road of fitting an electric PS pump instead; Again not too expensive but can disappoint if you're not expecting it.

My old '98 4.2 gave me lots of strife. But when it was all fixed it was lovely to drive. Then I crashed it...

A.
