It's unlikely to be the petrol. I'd bet my life on that.

It seems to me more likely to be the fuel pump relay, the fuel pump itself. The former is the most common. Beyond that it is a matter of checking the various elements of the fueling system.

I believe this is KE Jetronic yes? Next time it's not starting listen out for the fuel pump. It should prime when you switch the ignition on, every time. If it's not doing this then you have a problem and it won't start without that fuel pump priming sound. If you get this problem, most common culprit is the relay in that picture there, 99% sure it's the one on the left - it's the fuel pump relay. You can repair them (dry joints) but best to replace it really as they fail so often on 190s and 300s and I would guess the 560 is the same.

I had this on my 190 and for a year it would sometimes start, sometimes not - totally random. Traced the problem and with a new relay it's been fine for 8 years.

I mention this because you solved your problem by removing these relays. It may not have been the WD40 that did it, but very possibly just the fact that you disturbed the relay brought it back to life.

If you're adventurous open it up and look for dry or broken solder joints.

Yeah it's dealer only, but I'm not sure what a new one is. maybe £80 but possibly more.
If you tell me where it is on the car there might be one on a scrap 560 I know of; I'll let you know if so.

There is a chap called Rob Parker breaking a 560 SEC on Ebay. He is pretty helpful. Also try Chris at Mercman. Dronsfields are less helpful. The problem with a used relay is that these things fail because of age, so the used one may well fail soon. I know I replaced my cruise control ECU with a used one and, 12months later, it has started to fail in the same way. if you are handy with a soldering iron, try re-soldering the connections on the back of the circuit inside the relay box.

In the scrap car I found they were both gone, sorry.
I imagine 380/420 items would work - the fuel pump relay just powers up the fuel pump and cuts it if you hit the rev limiter or the engine cuts out, not too much more complex than that I believe.
