Just wondering how many people consider themselves clumsy.

Also, why are some people clumsy while others are not? It isn't just about balance. I mean if you put a cup on a dining table, a clumsy person is more likely to knock it over when reaching for another dish, for instance. So, what causes clumsiness? Another example: I watched one girl walk across a cafe the other day and there was a chair right in front of her that she had plenty of time to acknowledge. She stubbed her toe on it.

I do stub my toes alot, but i think that has more to do with my big feet and other family members putting random crap in the middle of the floor for no good reason.

Nope.

I actually have rather good reactions as well, so if I for example inadvertently knock over something on a table, I have been known to catch it before it falls (a bottle of wine once), and if I knock something off say a mantle or similar I sometimes catch it before it hits the floor.

Now, I know that what I have put above makes it look like I knock a lot of stuff over, but I don't think I do. I'd also struggle a bit with martial arts if I kept tripping over my own feet etc...

So is it down to training/sport?

Interesting question.

I was pretty nifty as a kid and was always up to things like climbing trees and playing football and martial arts etc.. so perhaps a little. I also have been fairly sure footed, like climbing over rocks etc.. I'd happily jump between them and climb walls etc...

BUT, I have a friend who is a blue belt in Judo but is clumsy as f**k.. I mean, walking through a doorway is likely to lead to her bumping into the frame.

I think you either are, are you aren't. Basically, I am not convinced it can be taught, though I would say if you were really clumsy that you could pay far more attention to your surroundings and perhaps that would result in less "clumsiness"..

Well some are hindered in motor skill (co-ordinating hands to commands from brain) because of various things (like me, I have Aspergers Syndrome).

I go by the general rule of people over 6ft 2' are clumsy.

By definition, I'm not clumsy.

Yes, I can't decide whether it's trained/learnt or not. If you were clumsy, though, would you forget to pay attention to your surroundings? Perhaps this is why some people are clumsy.

Fair enough. Do you have any coping strategies? Or do you just have to live with the potential clumsiness? Is it really considered clumsiness, though?

Damn, I was just about to do that, but missed the mouse button entirely and ended up knitting a pair of baby's booties.

I think that's called ADHD.

I would have thought if you KNEW you were clumsy (I'd say large bruises from falling over etc..a lot would be a clue) then you'd attempt to concentrate a bit harder in future so as not to fall down the stairs etc?

We're not all clumsy. Although having more of you to shift about doesn't help, so it's a fair point. I can't be clumsy because of my job. I play with mains electrics, and if I were to be clumsy I could end up dead, or worse, with comedy spiky smouldering hair.

I'm really clumsy, except at work when everything is so minute and detailed, oh except today when I got my handbag tangled round the back of my chair and I couldn't wheel about but I was in the middle of a scale and polish, grrrr!

I can't push a trolley round the supermarket without stubbing my toes on the wheels or walk through a busy mess hall/canteen without skidding on a chip and making a big show of myself! I'm so goofy its embarrassing paperbag
