Not when next year's cars are so different* to this year's & people have realised what an advantage Brawn had by spending the '08 cash on the '09 car.

  • All cars must have much bigger fuel tanks & that's a total redesign in itself + according to next year's tech regs the budget capped teams can run double the KERS output, engines that run unlimited RPM & can be changed every race + 4 wheel drive. Yes, I had to read that last bit several times before it sunk in too).

Couple of minor changes then.....

So double the Kers output and 4 wheel drive to put it down with.

I look forward to the big sponsors forming their own huuuuuge accountancy departments to work out how to maximise every single little financial loophole as a 'gift' to their respective teams...

Indeed. And anyone who thinks any different is naive in the extreme.

Thats interesting. Not read all of the announcement- 4wd??? Is this to entice Audi into Formula 1, I wonder???

So, the 2009 spec cars will be seen a freaks, a blip on the F1 evolutionary ladder. A bit like the full skirt noi front wing cars of the early 80s, perhaps??

And I agree with the title. I can imagine so many manufacturers writing 09 off- pretending it didnt happen- and concentrate on the 2010 cars.

So the way I see it is that the regs are biased in favour of the capped teams.

KERS, despite it being rubbished by all team managers, has now reached the stage where teams can have two of them. Mind you, given the amount of money the teams have spent on them so far, any new one entering will have to spend the £40m on its KERS alone.

The biggest change, from what I've read, is that instead of the mechanics rushing out at the end of each race, it will be a bunch of accountants and lawyers.

It will have to be policed by a whole series of precendents. No team will know what it can and can't spend until it or another one is taken before this committee of three.

And what's this: teams will be notified which ones are accepted? At least that rules out opportunities for bias and corruption.

Whilst this is considerably better than Mosley's ideas and suggestions, it still has major flaws.

Iy would seem that FOTA are going to have a meeting on it so it is not all settled at the moment.

Giving the teams three weeks to work out their whole straegy for next season is a typical Mosly move. He's used it often enough before but I would assume the teams willl have worked out a way of combatting it.

so with these rule changes coming into effect next year, the teams that are currently off the pace wont bother developing their cars to make them competitive, meaning that the title (drivers and constructors) will end up with one of the three teams currently on the pace ie, Brawn (c'mon Jenson), Red bull and Toyota...

and another thing, any wet weather race and the 4 wheeled drive cars are going to drive off into the distance..............

the FIA are really a fking, 4 races in and the season is all but over with regards to any form of real competition!! I used to love F1, but am so sick of all the bullst regs!! Moto gp is so much more of a racing event!

I think all that they are saying is that you are free to do what you want, as long as it does not cost money.

Would you choose to blow money on a Cossy engine that does 21000 rpm but disintegrates half way through every race? or introduce a front diff with KERS that weighs and costs nothing?

Unlimited teams can also choose the best drivers without consequence. How much would you want to save by employing Marco Andretti?

I rather suspect that the drivers will simply end up on the sponsors payroll rather than the teams.

Where did the 4-WD info come from ?

Is this in the FIA press release ? No one else is reporting this from what I can see (BBC, James Allen, Autosport). They are all just mentioning the rev-limit and moveable front and rear aero.

It is mentioned in there that theoretically 4wd is available to them. I wonder though if 40mill is enough to develope the car to best take advantage of the freedoms? How much is it to develope a car from season to season? and more importantly for new comers, from scratch?

I think the refuelling ban is a massive change, as said it requires a complete redesign. Also what happens in quali now? and think of the poor refuelling rig guys, they are out of a job wink

Don't know why they're not reporting it but it's correct.

Williams also built a six wheel car. It was never raced.

Four wheel drive I welcome. Been on about it in F1 for years - IIRC, up until now, it was simply not allowed under the rules. It may not take the conventional form involving shafts and differentials as is common practive, but could be electric motors/brakes in each of the four wheels as part of a KERS arrangement.

For me you can forget the 20,000 plus rpm and some of the other parameter changes, this 4WD mullarkey could and no doubt will be most interesting to see the various complex interpretations for the F1 cars until one of the teams comes up with a 4WD/KERS arrangement that is the obvious way to go ~ then all the teams will want some of that ~ could take a season or three though as with most past innovations in F1. Petrol/Diesel-electric traction is nothing new ~ who knows what the future may bring ... Roll on I say.

This $40m budget is going to be ridiculous and un-policeable.

Anyone who has worked on Formula Student will know how unworkable this is.

Wow, that's a pretty big change. The potential advantages there are huge. If they are allowed to be computer controlled then the cars would be insanely fast down the straights as they reduce the angle and pile on the downforce for braking and cornering.

I think it's quite clear that the FIA are loading the rules so much in favour of the £40mil capped teams that the others simply can't compete - thus everyone will have to go the capped route.

How on earth this will be policed though is anyones guess.

Why?

Surely this just means a tarmac rally super special round the same special stage, time and time again?

At a time when the teams are supposed to not be spending money how is this going improve the spectacle?

Seriously, I'm utterly lost here, what is the point in devleoping a 4 wheel drive system on an F1 car?
