Impreza Type R advice
Discussion
Had my heart set on an Impreza P1 and decided to go with the P1 over the Evo6. Problem is I changed jobs recently and will be stretching the budget a little to get a shabby/high mileage P1, and may end up experiencing crank failure. There are plenty of Type R imprezas for sale for a much lower price. Should I opt for one of these import beasts instead? Insurance is surpriningly the same on the P1 and Type R.
I set my sights lower and have viewed a few WRXs 1997-2000 models but am finding that everywhere I look, there are scoobies which all look very similar. The 2 door sets them apart in my opinion I'd rather spend a few extra quid on a 2 door rapid import.
I have seen a few Type R STI Version 5 and 6 selling for around the 5K mark and I could stretch to that. Any pitfalls to look out for?

I run both a P1 and 22B (22B being more like the Type-R's than the P1....) and can tell you that the P1 is a far more compliant and effective road coverer than the 22B.
The P1 is far more capable on our countries roads and if it is going to be used for road use only I'd get the P1 if you can afford it. Suspension set up is awsome and you get a better ratio'd gearbox for road use instead of the very short import 'box.
There are a few about that have been up for sale for a while so you never know what kind of deal you might get.
Either way- good luck with the hunt, I'm sure either way you won't be dissapointed!

I have driven a few 22B's, Type R, and P1's on road and track and owned and tracked 2dr STi Type R V-LTD and been on Prodrive test track at warwick 6 times
as allsop said above
The STi Type R is lighter, quicker and has DCCD but no ABS, it's a more "focused Drivers Car" 90% of people would love the raw go-kart feel of the Type R but may gradually hate it as a daily drive as you need all your fillings replaced every 1000 miles

The P1 is a very Quick all rounder, suspension designed for UK roads and great for Holidays and shopping

Depends on you want from the Car a weekend 2nd Car or track Toy then Type R otherwise go towards P1.

The Type R and P1 are effectively the same car. People used to take the pee with parts for imports but thats not really a problem any more.
Just make sure you run it on super unleaded only. A quality rebuild should be £3k tops if it comes to that.......
Agreed always run both P1 and Typer R on SUL as they were jap programmed @ 100ron. Prodrive could not remap their cars ECU till late till 2002 with EcuTek software. Prodrive on both P1 and 22B UK's put Brocketts in petrol tank as a defence against detting Just make sure you run it on super unleaded only. Subaru V5 onwards can be remapped to UK fuel it would be my Job on any unmolested P1 or Type R. IIRC IMHO
Mike Wood who designed and Developed RB5, P1, WR1 & RB320 gave this explanation of what a P1 "is"

The show cars were built from Blue STi V5 Type Rs made to look the part ( we used the white one for development as we had it 'in stock' and couldn't wait for blue ones to arrive.
A P1 isn't a Type R with bits removed, it best described as a V6 4 door built into a2 door bodyshell with Type R suspension. Bit more complex than that as some parts were fitted in Japan and more were fitted in the UK but it's more correct than saying it's a low spec Type R.
IMHO

P1s are great cars, but they just don't feel quite right to me. I can't really explain it, but after owning a version 5 STi 5 type RA Ltd for many years the P1 doesn't do it for me. All of my Subaru driving is now track or B road based, so this naturally biases me to the more driver focused car.
If I had to have a 2 door, it would be a version 5 Type R Ltd - this is about as close to the RA as possible in terms of mechanicals. If my memory serves, it lacks the very quick steering rack and the helical (Quaife ATB style) front diff of the RA, but retains the plated rear and driver controlled centre diffs, and has the same engine.
