Hiho,

What ever happened to the talk about organising a PH Herf? Did anything ever happen? ... Bebs! ... Come one man!

Just popped into Alfred Dunhill (on Davis Street) and their Cigar Sampling area has come along by leaps and bounds. They now serving food and drink as well, while you enjoy their cigars under the sun.

Their humidor seems to have stabilised well and I spent a good moments "taking in the air" while chatting to one of the sales girls who (at the very least) knows the difference between a cigarette and a cigar and has even tried a few. The old chap that runs that section was not in today as he was away at a conference/sales event for pipes.

I think I might just have to wonder there after work for another chat and to sample some of her wears ....

[Yes, dear ... I know am late ... Its Friday and the traffic was murder! ... Honest! ... What?! ... What do you mean that your on PH as well?! ... Gulp ... Ummm ... No dear, she was really ugly ... Honest?...]

Odd. My wife won't come within a mile of me when I've got one burning & I don't know any women who tolerate the smell of cigar smoke.
The only person ever to pull with a cigar was Slick Willy aka Bill Clinton!

A definition:
"...A lively gathering of cigar-smoking comrades who meet in a restaurant, club, cigar store or home to share their appreciation of fine cigars..."

Its a Cigar Smoking Event.

Quoting entirely from Microsoft Explorapedia.

The term "Herf" used to describe the smoking of a cigar comes from the 1960's in America when many cigar smokers listened to Herf Alpert and the Tijuana Brass while smoking their favorite stogie. The music was latinesque and thus provided an atmosphere of semi-cuban reminiscence. Soon, cigar smokers began to say things like "I was with the Brass last night and the Herf was so good I thought I was in Havana." Thus, we can all thank Herf Alpert for his influence on 'garbonics.

Since the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinski cigar incident, I can no longer think of cigars as just being a refined man's way of convivially passing the time. I am btw an ex smoker, but I dearly miss an after dinner cigar.

There seems to be various thoughts on where the word came from:

I'd be interested but;

1) I live in Scotland

And

2) I smoke Phillies/Jewels Sweets. Which I understand is sacrilege. biggrin

I have heard (and do believe) that people in Scotland (are allowed to) do the oddest thing! wink
