I have a 2004 XJ with about 45K miles. The gearbox fault light has come on twice and each time I have switched the ignition off and restarted the car and it seesm to reset itself and is fine again. In the gearbox fault mode it seems that it is stuck in first gear and will not change. Does anyone know what to do or do I have to take it to a dealer and get it sorted? Is this a common fault with Jags and is it gearbox related or ECU related? Any help would be most appreciated

Hi Gofer,

i have a 53 plate xkr and 5 weeks ago the gearbox fault light came on.
jaguar assistance sent a technician and he told me fault code P7083 was showing and the car was locked in 3rd gear.
however the next morning it drove fine and no code was showing on dash.Last week i had it checked out with stratstone main dealers, they informed me that although the ECU had the code showing the car was driving fine and this can happen more than people realise.
They did however tell me that if the code shows itself on the dash again they will replace gearbox through warranty.

The odd thing was that the fault first showed itself 2 days after having the waterpump for the supercharger replaced
and the engine coolant low level light was on along with the gearbox fault, then when i topped up the coolant level the car was no longer locked in 3rd gear......just seemed as though the gearbox code was related to the coolant?

best of luck with your car and please keep us posted

Thank you when you say that they would replace under warranty i am assuming you have kept your warranty by paying additional premium

Hi,

i purchased the vehicle last august and it came with 12 months full warranty,so will have to renew when it expires especially if the gearbox fault has not been rectified by the time my existing warranty runs out.
