After rebuilding my laptop I started to restore the files to my hard drive during which point my left foot went like Christy Brown and knocked the drive over. Tested to 4g shock my arse. In the blink of a spasmotic flinch my entire backup went. Gutted, really sad about this. OK I should have had more backups etc and I have the jpegs but its the raw files that I've lost for ever that I am gutted about. Its the shots I went to America for, drove 2000 miles in land to get, it is those that I am most upset about.

Can a specialist attempt to retrieve the data?

Try the Computing forum. It may well be that the files are all still there, but it can't find them. 'Table of Contents' or some such.

Stig, sorry to hear your bad news, it is a salutory lesson to all. Hope you can find a way to recover the files.

I've never had to get it done myself thankfully, but it's my understanding that if you're prepared to spend the money a forensic disk recovery service should be able to get some or all of your data back. While the drive may no longer function the data should still be on the platters and so can be extracted with the right hardware.

sorry to hear stig, nightmare when a external harddrive fails,i have 2 western digital drives 320g,i backup to both in case one fails,i know it does not help now but at only approx £60 each worth backing up on 2 drives.although as you say tipping one over with your foot should not cause a problem !

Switch to a RAID hard drive next. More expensive as less Gb for your £ but can re-build data in case of loss as info is stored on more than one disk!

cheers all,the gutting part of it is that my job is to protect against such issues. Builders home always last to finish wink

I still feel sick to the core about it but as mentioned above I am prepared to spend the money and will use one of our providers to quote for a restoration. From the sound of it it sounds like the head isn't seeking, it doesn leave park. I doubt the platter got any contact and hopefully there is no embarrassing porn on the drive so I dont mind getting it recovered (if possible).

1st thing on shopping list when I get home will be a SANS farm!!!!

I have a couple of backup drives but I suffered failure before and I hadn't backed up for a couple of months so I lost everything I shot between October 2007 and December 2007. This included the shots of Amanda in the green dress with my station wagon. That's the only shoot I was worried about so I've not spent having the disc recovered. Gutting though.

ug, backups... personally I've dodged a bullet once or twice. No more....

Got a 2TB Raid disk, however and the reason for the post this doesn't help if some thieving scum knicks it/house burns down etc.

www.mozy.com

for $5 a month unlimited back. Just trickles up. Initial upload took a couple of months, but now I have over 350GBytes of data on it.

Tis a no brainer. Bet my ISP loves me!

Sorry to hear that Stig - been there and bought the T-Shirt but I'm sure not with the quality of photo's you've lost.

I now have three back up drives and also use iDrive just to be sure. As we know, a photo is a moment in time captured forever................and hopefully never lost frown

Yep, once upon a time we printed them onto paper so they'd last forever (witness those sepia photos of your Victorian ancestors - 120 years old and still going strong). Now we keep them as ones and zeros on a state-of-the-art whizzy thing that will eventually break, be outmoded or othewise incompatible with the next load of whatever comes along. Such is progress.

I do wonder if we will ever really have the documented history our ancestors had or will they be lost by a drive crash or something similar!

I have not found many members of the younger generation who would seem to be concerned about such things. Live for now, short attention spans, instant everything.

Perhaps this is the way all 'civilisations' end. Except for the last few decades most people (so far as we know) had no easy way to keep pictorial records of those around them. Gutting as it is on an individual basis, maybe it doesn't matter much? Lets face it there aren't many images of Shakespeare around but that doesn't seem to have done his long term reputation any harm ... wink

On the other hand, bad luck Stiggy. Murphy always strikes when you think you have things covered.

tried mozy, big con never liked it. They didnt say (at the time) that if you use backupdrives and the data is no longer on your pc that they will remove the file from their servers

Remember all - hard drives do not make backup devices, RAID or not!

Seriously. Sorry to hear about your loss.

they do if you have several of them not in the same location. You would have thought I learnt my lesson the first time :whistles:

wink

I am going to send it off, the only shots that I want are those of my trip to america.
