Rx7, Evo 7/8 or R34 GTR?
Discussion
Right folks i need a hand here with a liitle dilemma of mine! I currently own a '03 350z with some minor mods and im looking to go into turbo territory.
My options are:
R34 GTR
Evo 7 or 8
OR
Rx7 plus a wee civic to round around in.
What do think guys? I need something thats going to be a fine street car that I chuck some extra dosh at but also a daily driver....well not really the latter because i work offshore and only benefit from playing around half the year.
Please help!!!!!!

I want an all out street car which i can launch up the drag strip from time to time. I've got the dosh to spend on the R34, but i dnt know anyone who has an rb26dett and i dnt really know how realiable they are and how often they should be serviced. Same goes for the evo8, and how much would it cost me to get a gsr upto a useable 400bhp? I know the rx7 isnt going to run forever but that would be a toy.
If you want a dotn worry about it 400hp, then the GTR is your car. But its a big heavy thing and not the best car for blatting it about. The rx7 will probably give you the most joy as it has a sublime chassis and an amazing engine. The evo is a bit boring for me, it does everything so well that you feel like a passenger...

You could have a usable 400 bhp out of a bog standard VIII GSR with the following:- Fuel pump £80
- Exhaust £500
- Airbox mod £Free
- Cams £300
- hotside £150
- Boost controller £200
- Remap £300
I make that just over £1,500, but if you want to launch it at full power, you'll need an uprated clutch, which will probably double that amount.
If you're happy with 370 bhp, you wouldn't need the cams, hotside or boost controller saving you around £750.
Just over a year ago I was in a similar situation, my budget allowed me to choose between an R34GTR a Honda NSX and an RX7 over a very hectic 2 days I tried them all and in the end bought a 380 BHP RX7. I am sure owners of the other two cars would argue a good case for each but here is my opinion. R34GTR superb car in every respect but no real seat of the pants feel, it went so fast around roundabouts that I thought within a month I would be going around at such silly speeds because it would do it with such ease. NSX always wanted one and nearly paid the deposit for one when first anounced but the price kept going up so gave up the idea of buying new, fabulous car but felt 'fat' and I swear it reminded me of my wife's old Prelude inside and I think an Esprit V8 might be better value. So I bought the RX7 within 6 weeks of ownership it blew the engine despite me doing my homework fortunately I had a spare wad of cash so got it re-built by a local respected rotary specialist (there are a few nationally)had new suspension and polybushes all round and I love it and waste a load of money on Shell V-Power. If you go for the RX7 get a late model be prepared to have the engine re-built regardless of what you may be told by the previous owner(£3-4K) get Tein coilovers and the full polybush set all round (£2k) and you will really enjoy yourself.

I went for an early model, it's my daily driver, and it hasn't gone pop.Yes, keep some cash just incase the worse happens, but do your homework, get on the owners clubs and properly research the cars you might buy, and you'll be fine.
A big thumbs up for Teins here as well.
Both the EVO and the GTR will cope just fine with 400bhp if you do it properly.
GTR will cost more to run, but will sound better with that straight six.
I would get a EVO MR if the GTR is on the edge of the budget, spend the savings on some well thought out mods and have some money left over for servicing etc.

hotside?
Turbine housing on the turbo. Evo VII and Evo VIIIs come with a 9.8 hotside whereas Evo VIII MR and later cars came with a 10.5 hotside (as did the Evo V and VI). Going for the slightly larger hotside allows the turbo to flow more air to reach the higher bhp levels at the expense of slightly later spool.
