Can anyone help me here.

I have an Astra diesel, the cambelt was changed a few months ago, I did an oil change about 3 weeks ago and left it just over max on the dipstick as I could'nt be bothered letting a bit out, thought it would have burnt up within a couple of weeks.

The problem now, is for the past week it has been blowing blue smoke from the exhaust when it's cold. It's always done this for a few seconds when first started from cold, but now it won't go away until the engine gets hot. Also when building up revs or pulling away, the engine shudders, get the thing on the motorway and it's fine.

This week I have changed the fuel filter and added Forte to the fuel filter and tank to clean the fuel system and added Wynnes Stop Smoke to the oil, after first draining 1 litre from the sump. I added the Wynnes to the oil to stop any oil seeping past the valve guides and into the cylinders, but there is no change, it's still blowing blue smoke.

The only other thing I can think of is the fuel pump on the engine could be at fault, maybe the bloke who did the belt did not tighten everything properley and something has eventually come loose.

Anyone had any similar problems, and if so what was done to rectify the problem, I don't want to spend to much on it as it's only on R plate 98 with 105k on the clock. Not over the top mileage as the last one I had did 250k before it packed in.

Would greatly appreciate any ideas.

Its blue smoke so this indicate's fuel, did it do it after the belt change?,cam timing on these must be done with the correct tools to set the cam/pump timing, get this double checked first.

It started smoking about 2 weeks after doing the oil change, the belt was done about 3 months ago and all has been fine until the past week.

Blue smoke is oil. Black is fuel. White can be fuel or water problems.
Have a look at http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-engine-smoke....

Is this a high mileage engine & have you used a thinner grade of oil than normal?

The engine has done 108k which is not a lot for a diesel, the oil is on the thin side as I understand it is fully synthetic which the manual recomends to use. The problem did dissapear once the engine was hot, but now the problem is getting worse and the blue smoke is constantly there along with the engine juddering. I understand that it could be the valve seals or the actual pump may be out of time.

Thanks to all that have replied, I have had the timing checked and it was a tooth out on the pump timing, this has been corrected and a further oil change did cure the problem for about 10 minutes. The blue smoke remains and there is back pressure in the radiator header tank, rather than trying to fix the engine, I'm looking for a replacement engine. If anyone has a good Vauxhall diesel engine 1.7 TD low blow 8 valve, then give me a shout as I will be interested.

Thanks
