Put key in inignition starts no proplems but have no blower on the heaters and the horn just gives out a very quiet squeek indicators everything else works cd ,windows ,seats ,lights,
When i turn the key back about 3 mm the heaters start working as though its not returning properly
after market alarm had been fitted but disconnected
Sprayed WD 40 in barrel now i have to rattle the key in the barrel to get the steering lock to disengage

THE STARTER MOTOR is not engaging cluncks and spins takes anything from 3 to 7 attempts to start is this related

The key opens all the doors no problem if i need a new ignition barrel ,how much and best place to buy parts /Same for starter motor chassis no. WDB 126 0452A 417832 560 SEC auto 1988

any pictures of starter motor and location as i ,ve just bought my first merc and they don,t do a haynes manual for 560 SEC
Cheers John

If they do a Haynes for a 420/500 SEC or SE/SEL then get that anyway - they're very very similar. The 560 just has a bigger engine but it's the same basic engine with the same basic systems. Hell I imagine the differences are slim.
And the SE or SEL is the saloon version but its the same car really.

Might be wise to change the ignition barrel - only because I know that when they fail at the worst you can't turn the key at all, which means you can't get it out to put a new one in. So you have to drill it out. And I've heard they're made of some sort of kyrptonite or adamantium so you absolutely kill drill bits trying to make any difference to it whatsoever.

The horn will be set to "city horn". There should be a switch just below the ash tray, between the heated seats button. Press it and try the horn again.

Tried it in both positions one nothing the other very quiet,The switches on the paner have been replaced by a previous owner at some time the switch on the left operates the radiator fan ,the other two operate a pair of induction filters that have electric fans in them ,they must have disconnected the other switchs need to investigate this and get back to stock ,and remove all the AMG stickers
Cheers for that

Glad to hear you want to get it back to "stock". For used parts I would recommend Rob Parker on ebay, he breaks them. If you type in "W126" into ebay you will find him, just look at the user name. He is helpful and parts are fair prices.

Also mercman.net is good.

I also find benzworld.org a very useful forum for the W126, might be worth signing up to if you have not already.

Do you have any pics of the whole car? When did you buy it?

Not sure about the vents, cant say I have even noticed them. Will have a look though. I assume the sunroof was taped up because of a leak. May just need a new seal.

Just to mentioned, sometimes the prices for parts at the Merc dealerships can be surprisingly reasonable so worth a look. Also check out www.eurocarparts.com

I'm not normally a fan of modified Merc but I actually think that looks really nice! Once you sort the little problems out you'll have a great car, and a future classic.

Hi Sonny
The vents are under the carpets on each side of the car you can,t see them from outside as the side of the rear bumpers hide them.I got a service pack from mercedes newcastle said they like to keep the older cars on the road 25% discount, ,oil , air , fuel filters 8x plugs £77.12p expected to pay much more.

Yeah the Newcastle dealership is really good. I was down there for a club event they put on a couple of years ago.

Anyway, let me know how you get on with the Merc, I'll be interested to hear how things go. I've got a 420SE I'm thinking of breaking... or fixing... not sure yet! Currently driving a 300SE (manual) which is extremely rare, only seen one other in the UK. Got it in January and am really enjoying the manual box.

Cheers
Norm

Not sure if Haynes do a manual for the w126. Your best bet for workshop information is to join the Mercedes-Benz Club. This gives you free access to the Mercedes-Benz Electronic Parts Catalogue and Workshop Information System. This is what the dealer uses and is miles better than anything Haynes will have.
