....for a car I've never driven.

I'm restoring an old fishing boat (stay with me!) which needed a new engine. Friend knew of a Sierra diesel estate which had sat in his local pub car park for around 12 months which had been running well before being parked up. After speaking to the landlord (it turned out that he owned the car) we got a short history. It had been parked up for a few weeks before someone reversed into the offside front wheel bending the suspension making it undriveable. During the following months it had become more damaged by various knocks and keying.
The brewery then told him that it had to be removed, the scrapman was arranged but was beaten to it by me. As it was a freebie I was happy to see if the engine was OK, if OK we would remove the useful bits then scrap the rest,if not I would scrap it complete.
A towing dolly transported it home where a couple of hours work had it running as sweetly as....................well, a diesel!
Same day the dismantling began. Engine and box, exhaust, cooling system and a few bits worth selling were taken off and the local scrap man came and took the rest away for crushing.

Now the fun starts.

Landlord received a NIP for the Sierra going through a red light (in the local area), returned it saying that I was now the owner (fair enough, I was at the time of the alleged offence). Today I've got the NIP.

Now, at the time we picked up the car from the pub the number plates were missing. Thought it strange but as the car was to be scrapped anyway didn't worry too much (not enough?). Seems obvious now that they are on another car which ran the red light.

My problem is what to do now. The NIP leaves little room for any explanation of circumstances.

Over to our resident experts.

I'd return the NIP (not filled in) with a letter explaining what you've written above & any photos which will help prove your case. I'm sure they'd drop the case.

Just phoned Leics BiB.

They were more helpful than expected and asked me to fill in the NIP stating that the car had been scrapped but to add a covering note explaining the circumstances, also to give them the details of the car (Make, model, colour etc) so they can check the photographic evidence. They said that the chances are that it won't match the offending car.

Fill it in, cross fingers and wait?

Good news - just hope it wasn't an identi-car that the plates went on.

Unless Deltaf's right, of course

Horrible dark maroon Sierra estate, can't be too many about.
If it had been me I'm pretty sure I'd take it on the chin. Been through much worse.......

Update, hopefully final.

Had a visit from 2 uniformed officers complete with pile of paperwork.
Spent 15 mins being questioned as to my "story".

"Are you sure there's nothing else you'd like to tell us Sir?"

"Well Sir, we don't think that anyone would go to the trouble of stealing the plates off a car, to put on another worth £50"

"Are you positive that the car was undrivable, Sir?"

....and so on......

Until.....

"Well Sir, we have this picture which clearly shows the car in question".

Me:

"Er, that's a saloon. Mine was an estate, a fact which would have shown up on the DVLA records! A fact which I had already given you in writing!"

"Oh, well that's it then sir, goodbye".

I wonder how much that little lot cost while all along some scrote is still driving around on false plates.

That would be funny if it wasn't such a waste of time for all concerned......

So Mr E we have on the face of it:
1)Attempt to pervert the course of justice and other possible traffic offences, or
2) Cloned car whizzing around.

BiB interviewed Superflid to establish which one and established SF pure as driven snow - great.

OK so saloon v Estate but these circs deserve a bit of digging by Plod, OK maybe a fishing expedition, but at times it does bring results and well done Plod.

You must be a very religous man to believe that everybody tells the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

But surely they read the covering letter first, clearly stating it was an estate. And then looked at the photo, showing that it wasn't.......

Sorry, I think the bit with the dawning realisation of the two BiB about the Saloon and Estate must hahe been priceless! I'd have been giving them as much sh1t as possible for wasting my time and how stupid they have been. I mean, come on! It's not rocket science, is it?

All that waste of resources and time just for a NIP...

'er hang on a minute - so you mean to tell me that they spent all of that time and effort just to confirm that the car PHOTOGRAPHED wasnt the same as the one registered with the DVLA!!! Surely someone should have picked that one up already, shouldnt they?

I mean simple things like colour, make, model and body style are usual give aways to it BEING A DIFFERENT CAR!!!

Oh dear.... there is no hope for improving our roads if this is what it is like....

.... evidence in the photos that there is a duff car floating about on apparent false plates.

Who was the owner of the duff plates?

Could it me (not that it was) the owner of the plates was somehow involved may be giving the plates to a mate to use or using them himself on another car - you would be surprised what people get up to.

Good BiB do not accept everything at face value and go digging - it pays dividends.

I see the point about me possibly letting a mate use the plates. Not impossible.

I'm pretty sure that's not what was on the officer's minds (Don't forget their "Not worth it on a £50 car" comment), as soon as the saloon/estate mistake was pointed out they looked crestfallen. It was pretty obvious they thought I had been driving the Sierra.

My main gripe is that they had obviously not noticed the obvious until I pointed it out.

I didn't give them too much grief because I'm a nice guy.
