Notice to all Audi A4 owners! The default position for your front foglights is off! please do not use them in conditions of good visibility as it's bl00dy annoying at 7.30am on the M1 and it DOESN'T look cool. Yes, that includes the convoy of three silver ones this morning!

I think there needs to be a story on the news that confirms that people have been fined for having their fog lights on when they are not needed, as I think a lot of people do not realise that they are illegal (when its not foggy)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm......

Ok my daily car, an old J plate black Golf GTI, usually has the front fogs on. This is because the main headlights are rubbish compared to modern cars and I do 8 miles everyday down back lanes so they are always, always filthy!

I find the odd dozy sleeper tends to spot me on a dark morning before they pull out from a restricted visibility side turning, though despite the illuminations... not all!

Yes I've been nicked for it (nonsensical situation of routine stop just looking to do me for something) but still do it as I know it's helped me. I always ride my motorbike with the Dip beam on too.

Anyway I NEVER have the rears on. These are so much more dangerous as they burn a hole in your bloody retinas when you are stuck behind them in traffic, and obscure the brake lights on rainy days.

I personally think rear fogs should be green. Green is just as visible as red, think of port/starboard lighting on a ship, and it would be easier to 'rear flash' an offender as you overtake them with out them thinking you are just jumping on the brakes!

It is illegal to put your front fog lights on unless in reduced visibility, i.e. fog.

If your fog lights are on your a numpty. Cars do have acceptable front lights and if they don't then get them fixed.

Then surely your front fog lights must also be filthy, perhaps it might be an idea to keep a damp cloth in your car in order to clean your lights if dirt is restricting their operation.

Driving lights are something completely different, mounted higher up and come on with your main beam headlights.

I dont do it myself but im not that bothered about front foglights. It is a useful twat indicator anyway (if they have the front foggys on for no reason you can pretty much assume they will do other equally stupid things)

What really ks me off is the rear's. They seem to come on at the lightest wisp of fog or the merest hint of rain!

TURN THEM OFF. TWAT.

In one of my old Escorts the heated rear window switch would turn on once the engine was started (or the ignition was on) and would then stay on until turned off *OR* the ignition was turned off ...

... surely it doesn't take a huge mental jump for manufacturers to use the same arrangement for fog light switches!

Try mounting fog lights lower than "driving lights" on a TVR 390SE ... they'd be under the ground - Streaky

I think round surrey area is the worst for full beam!!
they dont turn them off when driving in town etc!
My auntie and uncle live there and he takes racing lines in country lanes and some corners said no more than 20mph he did 60 round them taking racing lines

Actually you are completely wrong on this one

If you had an Audi A4 you would know how appalling the standard dipped headlamps are, and this is why most Audi A4 drivers keep the the front fog lamps on as it's the only way we are going to be able to see where we are going

The real problem is cretins that have their rear fog lamps on when it's a bit foggy, but you can still see very clearly 500 metres or more in front of you.

Oh yes, and also, the cretins that still have have their rear fog lamps on days, and even weeks after we last had any fog

Actually just took a look at the regs, the only requirement is that the driving lights (really Optional Main Beam Headlamps) come on and off with your main beam. Fog lights can't be more than 1200mm above the ground though :P

Imprezas are the same (well mark one's anyway). The standard dipped lights are so poor you've got no clue as to what's ahead. Its the only car I've driven where full beam and fog's are almost necessary if its dark.

Sort it out subaru!!!

On the subject of switches, the original Mondeo came with a couple of grand anti-numpty features.

Firstly, with the rear fogs on, this utterly obnoxious yellow lamp would light up on the dash - by far the brightest thing there.

Secondly, the fog lamps were activated by pulling on the rotary light switch. The clever bit was that turning the lights off also turned off the foglights and they wouldn't come back on next time you turnd on the headlamps.

Two *very* simple ideas that I've not seen on a car since (modulo, perhaps, subsequent Mondeos and other sundry Frods).

I will just point out that if dipped headlights are so shite that you have to switch on front fogs to see where you are going this says a lot about the car.

If that aspect of the car is terrible then I suspect there must be other things wrong with it as well and I'd suggest having it looked at to check its OK.

Although I have never driven a Subaru at night I have passengered in one. There was no need for fog lights on dipped headlights that I could see. It seemed like a perfectly good car to me...

The purpose of front fogs is to illuminate the ground very close in front of you to enable you to see when all the dipped headlights are doing is creating whiteout in the fog ahead. It also enhances how visible the car is to oncoming traffic.

For them to be necessary the fog must be thick. The legal definition of this is "visibility less than 100 metres". If visibility is greater than that it is an offence to use foglights - front or rear. Madcop confirmed this for us last year and the Highway Code is very clear on this matter.

So switch them off, eh?
