Here's the brief: men's dress watch, no bigger than 40mm or so, no quartz, only complication allowed is date, steel/white gold case, white or silver dial. Price range - up to a couple of grand, and doesn't have to be new.

What I've found so far:

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra:

Rolex Air King:

Nomos Tangomat:

Any more for any more?

Why spend so much..

http://www.watchshopuk.com/gents-tissot-le-locle-a...

For the brief you have given you could have a new Tissot with an automatic movement. You can see the movement through the clear case back. It has a stainless strap and case , white or slver face etc etc.

I have a rolex but its timekeeping is crap and my everyday wearer is a Tissot automatic which I prefer

my daily wearer motorsport themed with steering wheel spoked see through back.

In fact I liked it so much I bought another with a white face and a black strap and alternate between the two..

yep just edited my post to include a link to my daily...

http://www.precisiontime.co.uk/tissot-t91141351-ts...

It also comes with a white face and stainless strap but is probably a bit sporty for your dress watch brief...

http://www.precisiontime.co.uk/tissot-t91148331-ts...

I love these watches though..chunky, automatic, see through backs, quality manufacturer in fact all the things you expect from Choppard or Rolex but at a steal of a price

I like the Omega Aqua Terra Broad Arrow, it looks brilliant. What about a used JLC Reverso? Or a Cartier Tank?

I was actually hoping for a photo you'd taken; I find that the web-shop photos don't always tell the whole story.

Sorry I don't have a 'real' pic. I can vouch for their quality and appearance though. The outer dial and the sapphire crystal front on mine have proved totally resistant to any scuffing scratching or wear and I am approaching five years now with the daily. The leather strap is particularly well made and robust and stylish too with the 70s style holed finish.
This watch is actually a re-production of a watch Tissot made in the seventies.

I have looked at many watches and in fact am a bit of a watch nut owning an original Seiko Sportura, a rolex yachtmaster, a Honda Bar seiko special edition and many more.
I have looked at Breitling , Oris , Omega , Zenith etc etc but I keep coming back to the fact that all those other makes offer nothing more other than a 'name' and a higher price tag.

It's interesting that I wouldn't really consider them to be proper dress watches - still too 'sporty'.

This is what I would consider but obviously at a slightly higher price.

Same comment as Asterix, that's not "dressy" it's got a big winder and looks like the sort of watch you'd wear horse racing. A dress watch needs to be something that would look good with a DJ that would not.

Just had a thought - I know who do very classic and simple watches that are good value - Junghans.

Let me see if I can find a piccy.

Here we go - http://www.junghanswatches.co.uk

Have a look at the Attache & Max Bill watches - very simple and classic as a dress watch should be.

And for something in the middle - Glashutte Senator Sixties - now that's a dress watch!

I was so impressed with that one that I looked it up but they appear to be more like £3,500-£4,000 frown

Sorry - meant priced in the middle of the Junghans and the Lange.

I've tried one on and it is a beautifully subtle piece. Lovely movement as well.

I say Air King

I bought one for the same purpose, classy understated design that IMO looks timeless (excuse the pun)

I bought mine in blue!

Why not get a vintage Rolex oyster date or air king date from the year you were born?

There are loads of lovely oyster dates and vintage steel air king dates with silver faces for c£1500. Simple faces with clean oyster bracelets. Some even have naughty little red numbers on the date wheel, which I quite like.

Y'know, this sounds like a quite marvellous idea.

A 'dress watch' never has a metal band.
