SE Vs S Line spec
Discussion
I think the S Line is the best bet - think the S stands for sport so you get uprated suspension resulting in a firm ride, 18 inch alloys, sport seats and some nicer body kit on the front, the doors and a roof spoiler. In my view it looks better, more sportier? I have just bought a 2.0 TDI 140 multitronic and I think its great. Tested an SE and it was much "softer" if that makes sense? Also I think the S-Line was a couple of thousand more than the SE. Mine came with the Multi media system (sat nav and phone) which works very very well. Hope that helps....
The range goes SE > S-Line > Le Mans. With the S-Line its a lot sportier as said above, with lowered suspension etc. Just make sure you like the ride quality of the S-Line versus the SE it makes a big difference. The Le Mans is basically an S-Line with 19" wheels and a few other bits like parking sensors thrown in.

Audi specs confuse me.
I hear "le mans" spec is the best.
Yet some of pics of A6s I see in the classifieds have manual g/b, windy heater controls (i.e. not climate) and pathetic small screen above the centre vents. i.e. no colour screen/satnav/tv etc. I could be wrong but I don't see a proper consistency.
Most SE and s-line look like poverty spec cars, but then again some are specced right up......
I guess all the "options" are hidden ones or those most don't care about.

Okay, technically this answer is irrelevant because if you really want a 2.0, as someone has already said it doesn't apply - so feel free to stop reading now!
However, on a slightly more general point I'd like to register a vote in favour of the Le Mans spec - while my A3 has been awaiting a backorder part my kindly local Audi dealer has allowed me 3 weeks in the company of an automatic 3.0TDi A6 Le Mans, which sadly I have to give back tomorrow.
I'd never really given A6s a second glance until now - I had assumed they all handle poorly and ride unpleasantly (such are the impressions I've taken from years of half-reading A6 reviews in Autocar).
In fact, my three weeks have told me it goes like a train, corners flat, handles very nicely especially at higher speeds, rides firmly but pleasantly and does 40-42 mpg (45 on occasion) - and this by the way is the older spec 233 bhp 3.0 - the new 240 bhp version 'offically' does 7 mpg more. It has every toy I could possibly wish for (admittedly as a dealer demo it's spec'd up, but the standard spec is not too shabby), is hugely accommodating, a lovely place to spend time, and I WANT TO KEEP IT!!
Anyway, getting slightly back to the OP's question I would strongly recommend S-Line/Le Mans spec - to my mind they look better, handle better and are better spec'd than an SE, and unless you have a particular liking for softer riding high comfort machines I can't imagine the (relatively) harsher ride vs the SE would be a problem. The Le Mans spec rides on 19" wheels which I'd have thought would make for a killer ride, but for me it's exactly as I like a car to be. Give them all a try for sure... but buy a 3.0 Le Mans. ;o)
Just my personal opinion of course... did I mention I don't want to give it back?!

...I am biased because i bought one. All you have to do is be prepared for the prive of the 19" rims. My 3.0tdi tiptronic quattro does 42-44mpg on the motorway

I've just bought an A6 2.7 TDI S Line Quattro Tip. Its on the S Line suspension and has the 19" Le Mans wheels. The handling is really good for a car weighing 1.9 tonnes. Its firm without being hard or crashy. High speed cornering is really good and the ride around town is very compliant. Visually, the 19s with the S Line lowered suspension looks fantastic.
Other than the suspension, most S Line options can be spec'd onto an SE. The Bose option is really good and worth having, so is Satnav with the higher spec MMI and phone options. I've got full leather heated seats, the high spec dual climate control and the voice pack for the audio but these are 'nice to have' rather than essential.
S Lines have half leather seats (very comfy and hold you well) and full leather is a low cost upgrade from these.
MPG on a cruise is low 40s (Quattro eats some of this, my right foot often eats even more) and combined average is low-mid 30s.
Its my first Audi and I am very impressed.

The thing is, that any of the base specs dont really change much other than the look of the car i.e. wheels, trim, front seats, suspension, spoiler etc. All of the options like leather, sat nav, BT, TV yadda yadda are all options for any of the base specs. You will find that in general the ones with teh bigger engines are specced best. Grab a brochure, theres a lotta options.I hear "le mans" spec is the best.

I had a previous shape A6 and it was a little simpler then. Essentially, basic, luxury(ish), sport.
Standard A6 - poverty spec etc.
SE - More equipment as standard (mine was an SE Quattro, better stereo, cubby trays under seats, fog lights and so on).
Sport - Same as an SE really equipment-wise but, I believe, with rubbish overly hard suspension (acceptable in a proper sporty model, S6, RS6 etc. but not in an otherwise, competent barge.) and possibly slightly larger wheels.
So now, is there still the standard model? Or is that now the SE?

There is still a standard model, and to be honest the spec is no longer so pov-tastic - dual zone climate control, front fogs, cruise, 10 speaker stereo, light and rain sensors... it has quite a few nice toys these days.
That said, I can't really think why anyone would be so desperate to buy a brand new standard A6 with all the associated depreciation, when for the same money they could pick up a much better spec'd SE or, for me, a rather sexier S Line Le Mans. I guess as a company car it would make sense.

Sorry chaps I did'nt say in my original post that I am after the A4 Avant.I have owned two A4 Avant SE's in the past, P reg and X reg and was well impressed.
I do like the look of the Sline and will be looking at 05/06 year, anything to look out for and what were the good additional options. I don't think ride quality will be an issue as I have owned a Porshe 964 RS and thought the ride OK.

I have an A4 S line saloon (55 plate, 2.0 TFSI multitronic saloon). I bought it used from an Audi Centre and it's well specced (cruise, DVD sat nav, leather, heated seats, Bose, blue tooth, parking sensors, 18" 9 spoke alloys) all of which I'd recommend. I personally couldn't do without the parking sensors and heated seats, and if I specced it from new, would get xenons and the multifunction steering wheel. The sat nav looks good but is frankly a joke compared to the functionality you get on a 200 quid tom tom.
My warning to you is if you want an auto, avoid the multitronic box (well talked about on this forum - do a search) and to do so, you need to go for a Quattro (and get the tiptronic). Otherwise, it's a fine car if slightly dull to drive. I plough up and down the motorway in mine and it's fine for that. Petrol turbo and multitronic is very thirsty...
S line is the way to go. The ride may be hard, but it isn't that bad and the car looks so much better for the S line styling pack and the Avant looks especially tasty with the big wheels, slightly more butch body kit and roof rails. Privacy glass completes the look in my opinion.
My biggest gripe is not with the car but with the absolutely appalling customer service and attitude I've had from 3 different dealers. I am planning my next car, and I've decided on a 530 touring. Regardless of what Audi can do on an A6 Avant, I just can't face dealing with their dealers any more.
