We beleave he was speeding, because he had alot of speeding tickets before he killed my nephew. And we need someone to prove how fast he was going with he killed him. So please anyone out there know anyone who reads those Black Boxes let me know. We live in Lakeland Florida. thank you all very much Bonnie

Talk to an expert witness who specialises in vehicle accidents. They will either know or will be able to suggest someone who does. They wil also be able to make a report on the black box contents giving all of the evidence, not just the speed, from the box.

My dad does this job but is based in the UK and he is not familiar with the US system.

Hi Bonnie. Sorry for your loss. I think you'll find the police need to request this info. I worked for an OEM and we only recovered data when the police asked. Flight recorder data was always under dispute in the US as your data protection laws are different. There was an argument that in NA, the driver owned the data, not the manufacturer, so the police had to struggle to get it. Like I said, ask the police to get it, and check with the manufacturer if the vehicle even records the data -not all do. I hope you can get something useful from it!!

I would have thought the police would have the Black Box if there had been a fatality...
