I've just bought a 1999 Impreza Turbo, pre-facelift. It was last serviced at 89k and is now on 98k so is overdue for a service. I don't have copies of the invoices for the last 30k's worth of services, just stamps in the service record, so I don't know what work's been done. I'm thinking to be on the safe side it needs a cambelt, plus a major service with diff/transmission fluids etc.

Are there any jobs that are particularly important at this sort of mileage? And how much am I likely to be looking at to get everything it needs done? I've been quoted about £500 by my local performance car garage to do what they reckon needs doing, i.e. plugs, filters, all belts, all fluids. Does this sound fair?

Cheers

I have owned a 99 for many years, like an old friend now, looking to buy a new car but the Impreza will stay in the family! As it happens mine has just passed 100k mark and I celebrated by treating her to the service you are referring to. It sounds like they are correct.

It is the big service about every 40K miles, which includes, as you say, cambelt all fluids etc and a good checkover, although not sure if it should be ALL belts? £500 sounds fair to me.

Make sure you get the cambelt tensioner changed at the same time.

Classic scoobs have a 7500 mile service schedule rather than the 10000 mile schedule for the newage. I'd personally be a bit wary of a "full" service history with no receipts or bills to back it up on one of these cars. If it's running okay and there's nothing untowards about it I'd get the cambelt and the schedule C service done just to be on the safe side. It might be worth getting a new MAF as well, although if it isn't showing symptoms of being on it's way out this isn't a must do job.

I'm pretty sure Subaru retro extended the classic shape service intervals to 10k, same as the newage stuff.
I have been known to be wrong on occasions though.
