Just sold a camera and the buyer says his bank (Nat West) want to charge him £12 to transfer about £30.

Surely bank/bank transfer is free?

Yup. Natwest don't charge if you do it on line.

Sounds like a CHAPS (Same day) transfer rather than BACS (3-5 days).

Agreed. Just done a CHAPS transfer the other day and Nationwide charged me £20 to do so! I would've done it online, but it seems you now need a one time password generated by that 'calculator' and your debit card. I never use my debit card and in turn I've forgotten my PIN, therefore no one time password for me ... frown

I needed to transfer cash to another account that very day - Armed with my account details, passport and driver's licence I popped down to my local branch for a new PIN number to carry out said transaction. No luck - It'll be in the post in a few days, which would've been no good to me ... So the £20 was a small price to pay smile
