Thinking of a getting myslef a 1 series. I like the sound of a 120d sport 54plte ish. 200bhp when remapped and 40mpg? Or do i get a 130i sport around the same age. i dont do that many miles, but still like to feel like i am getting good mpg - dont have to visit the petrol station as often..
What bhp is a 130i? what mpg am i likely to get from one bearing in mind it is lighter than a 3/5 series. What about a 120i? is this a happy medium? are the 120s a 6cylinder still?

Thanks.

apparently the 261bhp 130i does 34mpg average.

123d is obviously better than the 120d.

120i is 167bhp and does 44mpg allegedly.

I have the 120d as I did quite high miles when I bought it. With petrol prices the way they are now and my mileage back to below 15k it would be a 130i all the way now. If they really do 34mpg its about evens anyway - although the 130i is a lot more of a car.

Petrol ihas gone up a lot recently and diesel hardly changed so what was a 10-12% gap is now 5%... people clearly moving away from diesels has increased the supply of diesel thus cheaper pump price and vice versa with the petrol.

I'm not sure "clearly" is the right word; it's possible of course.

The 120i of the vintage you're talking about will be a 150hp model. The 167hp model only came along very recently I believe.
Both four cyl.

You will prefer the sound of the 130i, I can assure you.

Don't expect 34mpg from a 130i if you have any petrol in your veins! The noise it makes above 4krpm means you will probably get closer to 28mpg in the real world. Still great economy from something so fun! I managed 37mpg on one very dull 200 miles motorway run at a steady 70mph, so it is possible if you try.

If you're talking about the 120d, the current version has a 177bhp unit

I have to say I hated my 120d, a huge disappointment. Maybe the 130's engine might have made me like it, though when you consider the price, a 3 Series looks a good buy.

What didn't you like? I find it has some easily avoided bad points that are compensated for by the handling, steering and engine

I had a 120d as a hire car. Loved it actually (even though I hate diesel) they way the car handles was ace.

Anyhow, over the week I had it, I averaged 28 mpg so not great. I did drive it fast, but nothing crazy, just the same as usual, so I was not impressed with that. The 130i is the one (except for the 135). Buy it for the noise alone!

Don't want to start a rant but:

Couldn't believe how much rougher the engine was after my 330d; disappointing economy; appalling ride (better after ditched rfts); autobox hesitated on pull away and didn't change down soon enough; loads of trim fell off; paint flaked; pointless back seats; irritating switches.

Well, you did ask smile

Blimey...well I guess a 4 pot will feel rough after a 6, which is a lovely engine.
I'm basing my experience against the Mondeo TDCI and Vectra SRI and find the economy (now it has some miles on it) to be on a par with the 150 SRI but better than the Ford, it is very dependant on how heavy yer foot is though (typical BMW) Agree with the tyres, they are horrible, but so far everything else has been ok. I do seem to have problems missing gears for some reason, maybe the spring loading on the gear lever is a bit harsh.

Sorry, don't do gears smile

The combination of auto and the start button used to flummox me and others regularly, never got the hang of it, what's wrong with a key? (not just 1ers I know).

Drove a friend's Golf 1.9tdi (140) which felt a lot quicker.

Some of the pre-facelift diesels seem to get pretty poor economy, have a search on Babybmw.net as there's a couple of threads on there.

Ive got a 123d which is similar power to a chipped 120d and its certainly not as quick as the 130i's Ive been in. Although good for a diesel and more akin to the power delivery of a turbocharged petrol than most diesels, its still nothing like the 130i for engine note and character, so if you can afford the additional running costs, Id go 130i every time.

Totally agree, I loved my wifes 120d m-sport, after a remap it was even better, but if buying again it would have to be the 130i.

I keep thinking about swapping my M3 for one, it just does everything so well.

Had my 55 plate 130 M-sport for a week now and absolutely love it - after my 330Ci SE I am still not disappointed as I wanted/needed a hatch and to go back to manual.

The performance and handling wipes out the 330 IMHO but I am only getting 23mpg at the moment as I am having too much fun. Hope it gets better as I calm down.

For some reason I got around 4-5 mpg less in a 130i over a 330i, and again, our 120d auto only ever got 34mpg average, the 320d auto touring (efficient dynamics) returned 39mpg.

That's interesting (relatively) I've heard from several people now that the 1 series loses out to the 3 series equivalent on mpg, I wonder if they dropped a bk in the aerodynamics dept

I'm just driving the car harder because I can - it makes me want to use the engine/gearbox more. It's worth it just for the noise it makes when you floor it. (Sad I know but still good).

I'm sure it will even up once I get the initial enthusiasm out of my system and get to use it on longer journeys.
