I don't know if any of you have noticed but i'm sure that at around this time last year there were about 25 wedges in the classified sections. This year the number is very rarely over ten with most of those being long term culprits.

Is it that we are holding on to them now - perhaps not prepared to sell them in troubled times (although that doesn't seem to have put the chimera/griff crowd off) - or is something else. Could it be that the Wedges time is about to come as it transcends the gap from poor relation to true classic?

I'm keeping mine.

Yes I Agree less for sale this year,
As for Poor relation to true Classic,
maybe but I dont Care as I am keeping mine, If anyone takes to much interest and say that isnt bad for a 23 year old car, I just point out that you have to add 100,000 to mileage and no you still cant have it because no car has ever made me Grin so much.
I also have to add I do keep an eye on whats for sale as I keep thinking I want another one as well, but the OH has yet to be convinced that I increase the fleet.

What would you replace it with...

for that kind of money ???

I'm astounded by prices being asked for old rustbucket 2.8i Capris (freshly painted ones will immediately start to rot again), when a better-equipped TVR 280i can be had for probably half the price and give twice the fun, not to mention the option of a soft top and the exclusivity. confused

I've heard a few times over my years of wedge ownership that 'any minute now' they will become 'collectors' items' and the prices will rocket. rolleyes
So the 280 that I bought for £2200 in '95/6 is now worth... what, maybe £1750? And the 390SE that was par for the course at £6000 in 2000 is now worth... er, probably rather less than that, actually.
The last time anyone said that 280s would go up was just before the Tasmin Challenge started. Allegedly they would be sought-after (especially the Series 1 FHCs which were the lightest) as donors for the race series. When I tentatively said that I'd sell my car I was offered <£1500 for it by two guys, at least one of whom did take part in the Challenge.
Then I bought the 390SE and it took me a year to find a buyer for the Tasmin; in the end I just got my money back (though not what I'd spent on it, of course, including the £800 respray).

I gave up any notion that Wedges were valuable years ago biggrin Cherished perhaps, rare certainly, bottomless moneypits for sure, but not a gilt-edged security by any means.

Wedg1e - very true .. and also the fact that good ones only rarely come up for same .. and don't hang around long.

After skinning my knuckles for the past few months fixing various niggles, the 350i is finally ready for sale. It needs a good clean though and a few bits of trim putting back on, but I'll be getting it into the classifieds soon.

I did toy with the idea of selling mine and get a sensible family wagon but wanted to do a few jobs before selling it safe in the knowledge that I was offering up a tidy car.

I had the roof re covered and double lined by Hoods Galore, refurbed the wheels, replaced the Toyos, had the chassis and outriggers refurbed, replaced the windscreen, changed the original Blaupunkt to a Sony with iPod, had TVR tailored mats made and replaced 2 x UJs, brake pads all round, sorted the exhaust system, MOTed and Taxed it and thought ......................... I wanna keep it ! - other half not impressed but I did buy her a Bus Rover ticket.

If I ever make the plunge to sell, she ( the car, not the other half ) is a fine example, just can't seem to get my head around opening up my garage and not seeing her gleaming at me ( again not other half she just scowls ) and then opening her up on a country lane in the sun listening to that noise.

MIne was advertised 18 months ago and after a few tyre kickers, I decided to keep it laid up.

Having paid £20,000 in 1998 for mine and modded it over the years, its probvably not going to fetch megga bucks .. so for the time being, Ill keep polishing it, starting and running it every 2 weeks and generally keep it alive and in a useable condition. Maybe one day someone will offer me silly money for it but I wont be holding my breath.

Or just wait for the day when the kids grow up and then you remember you have a jewel burried in the garage..
