Football rivalries - the hatred
Discussion
Why is there so much hate in football ? It's bizarre, it really is.
Just chatting to a mild mannered man at work, in his 50's, life long Citi fan. He's a really nice bloke. I knew the answer before hand but I asked him if he watched Man United and Arsenal last night. For a man who doesn't swear, it was mildly amusing to hear him say "Why would I watch that load of s
ts". I knew he'd get riled so I suppose I was deliberately winding him up.
I went on to ask if he'll watch the final. Now, this bloke LOVES football but won't even bring himself to watch the Champions League Final because United are in it. He said he'll SKY+ it and only watch if United get beaten. Deadly serious.

It's absolutely mad !
Please, don't just turn this thread into a "Hate Man United" thread as I only used my experience as an example. I'm aware many people do hate United. But rivalry is huge with most clubs and another.
It's just a simple thread to study why the beautiful game is capable of producing such feelings of hatred.

I totally agree. I cannot believe the difference between Football and Rugby supporters. I mean all you have to do is look at the rugby and football threads on this forum to see the difference.
Atmosphere, banter and rivalry are done properly in rugby IMO. Football supporters and players could learn a great deal from the way rugby players and supporters conduct themselves.
When i first moved to live in England at 18 i went to my first rugby game and was quite shocked to see someone sat next to me wearing an opposition shirt. This is where my love affair and fascination with a game i had hardly ever seen before came from.
I love football, but i hate a lot of the things that go with it. There are a lot of great football supporters, but there are also a lot of ignorant, nasty and one eyed supporters.
What ever the result in a sporting match, both sets of supporters and players should be able to shake hands and share a drink after the game.

Dare I bring in class here? was thinking about it this weekend, watching the faces on some of the footy fans the hatred, its bizzare. I would say the footy majority, exlcuding PH members of course, are mainly made up of non educated chavs. Rugby and also cricket, the majority come from the working and upper classes where good education and schools form a good basis for these two sports.

May I be so bold to say that I enjoy the rivalry and the heavy atmosphere of a hate filled game ? Standing amongst friends supporting and chanting for your own team, aggrevating the aggrevators in the other stand.
Lets be honest here, I bet I'm not the one ?

Banter is fine, but so many times football supporters not only cross the line, but go way beyond it. I have heard the things that Everton fans chant about Steven Gerrard's wife and child etc and in return the things Liverpool fans have sung about Lee Carsley's disabled child. Getting racism out of football is great, but are chants like this any less offensive than racist chants? not to me and it should all be banned and 'supporters' like this should be ejected from stadiums and never allowed back.Lets be honest here, I bet I'm not the one ?
Of course, i like winding up my friends who support the opposition when they don't do too well, but its only banter and thats where i stop.

k though. I hate Liverpool with a passion but I'd still watch a final with them in it (if it ever happens again, like) because I enjoy football.Surely you can't hate United that much, otherwise you wouldn't know if Ronaldo was a cheating
or not ? Much like Gerrard. The Stuntman * said:

Whats that old saying something along the lines of Football is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans, and rugby is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen. ...
One fo the lads I go to the football with refuses to have Carlsberg in the house due to the sponsorship they have provided, I will admit to switching from 02 when they adorned the gooners shirts.
Alot of the banter at football is so crude as those involved lack the intellect to know when to draw the line, however it is slowly improving

It's nothing more than mob mentality.Lets be honest here, I bet I'm not the one ?
I have never understood why people get so wound up by football compared to other sports.
