Noisey cam follewrs?

Hi All,

Have a loud metalicy/tappety noise coming from my engine.Initially thought or should i say hoped it was a leaking manifold gasket. Unfortunatley i was wrong.A friendly mechanic advises me it is likely to be a noisey cam follower. Is this normal my car is a 5l 94m chim with 39k and full history.

Does anyone else have any experience of this?

If so whats the repair costs likely to be.friendly machanic is currently priceing upthe parts?

Whilst its apart you might as well change the cam at the same time, chances are one of the lobes is worn. Always replace all the followers with a cam though. Parts probably less than £200 all in £500-800 fitted, whilst your at it, might be worth putting a better cam in......................

Agree with Harry,

Had cam and followers done at 35k miles. Was v noisey, turned out one of the lobes was almost completley rounded off.

Topcats did mine, about £800 fitted IIRC

As I said putting a better cam in , I think the MC1 is poss the best available hydraulic grind out there. A a little more advanced, that is advanced in development terms, it actually has less mechanical timing advance than the stock 218 I have fitted though and is certainly better than refitting a OEM one IMHO. I take it the owners pleased then Joolz.

I would strongly recommend fitting steel rocker arms and throwing away the grotty ally ones. They can crack and break up and then start to take out the cam. See bible for some gory pictures. It could well be that this is what is causing the noise.

Mine sounds a bit rough around 2000 rpm. I'll do the lifters over the Christmas holiday and get my cam checked while I am at it.

I think the lifters are about £15 each, not sure about the cam though. I am guessing it's not the rover one, so chances are around £200.

If I manage to find the time to get the job done I will write a report on how difficult it was. Looking at it, it appears fairly straight forward.

Following on in this theme i have an intermittant tick ticking from one bank of the engine that goes if the revs are increased slightly as the oil pressure increases i guess?is this caused by a blocked oil feed or a worn tappet/valve?can i see the offending object if i remove the rocker cover???????

The key things to remember is to set the preload correctly otherwise it will all have to be replaced a few thousand miles on. If you have air con be prepared to have this dismantled and then regassed. It is not rocket science but it is easy to get wrong and not realise it until the engine starts to die later on.

I followed shpub's advice (and Tim from ACT I think said the same) & fitted steel rockers - was getting the tapping when hot but not when cold. The rocker shafts came assembled from V8D and cost about £200 IIRC. The ally rockers looked ok but one of the steel inserts must have loosened up when hot. The new ones cured this but now you start to hear other things, real or imagined.... Know what I mean!?
