Hi new x300 owner
Discussion
Hi i have been looking for a replacement for my saab 9000 which broke its timing belt a few months ago, i have looked at a few cars but was unable to find the right car for me so i bought a MB 190e to see me over the summer or until somthing that ticked all the right boxes came along, i have always liked big comfortable cars but one of the cars i have never considered before was a Jaguar so i thought why not and went and looked at a few and found a mint 1996 carnival red x300 4.0 sport fsh 99000 miles 2 former keepers, the options list is magnolia leather interior, aircon, electric sunroof, alpine upgrade cd autochanger, electric seats, wood leather steering wheel, front fogs, i went for a test drive and was sold, absolutly lovely car just what i have been looking for so i put the deposit down and pick her up on saturday any advice on maintenance ownership would be greatly appreciated.
Robbi, you've just bagged yourself the finest saloon car ever made. I bought mine in 96 and I'm still in love.
I'm not sure they have many particular points that need addressing.
Low batteries can cause all sorts of funnies with the electrics, including ABS (and probably traction control in your case) warnings and cycling central locking. If you get any odd electrical problems try giving the car a good charge and seeing if the problem goes away.
The cars are big and heavy and can be driven hard. The rubber suspension bushes have a hard life. Mine were replaced a number of years ago. BTW if they suspension isn't set up right the car handles like s
te!
The ABS units do go, the fault code will say it's the pump. It will be the control module. But try charging the battery first :-)
There are spots that can rust, and they'll rust if damaged.
Other than that hopefully it's just a case of keeping it serviced.
Oh yes and enjoying it.

Hi thanks for the advice, just getting into the car gives a sense of occasion very luxurious, noise levels are non existant with a very smooth drive, the handling is more responsive than i would have thought for such a large car, although it has sport suspension the ride is not to firm and it goes quite well when you put your foot down, i could not find any rust what so ever only a couple of stone chips to the front as would be expected for a car 13 years old and one slight blemish on the passenger door which is hardly noticeable, alloys all in good condition the colour combination of carnival red with magnolia looks very nice and in my opinion suits the car, she will be used on a daily basis my other car is a TVR Chimaera which comes out at weekends, its just what i have been looking for why i did not consider a jaguar before i dont know? possibly the old image but i am definitely now a convert.

If it's one to keep then I'd have a full fluid change - the whole lot, engine, gearbox, diff, coolant and brake fluid done and spend some cash on Waxoil or similar rustproofing too.
X300s are capable of huge milages if they are looked after and serviced properly, but just like any other older car do need looking after.

FWIW, I picked up a mint 96 for silly money about 4 months ago. Its my 3rd Jag now as I love them for daily runners. It had 130k on the clock then, now 140 and feels as tight as the day she drove out the factory. Done over 100k on Jags with the v6 engine and never paid more than 2k for a Jag. So far I can honestly say they have never once let me down. Awesome cars and the 96 seems to be built really well, at least if mine is anything to go buy. Was on a run a few days ago, 130 miles very late at night so just opened her up and enjoyed the comfort and serenity until I hit the twisties at which point much fun was had!
Great cars an if my experiance is much to go on, trouble free except for an exhaust issue on the 96, but easily solved if it dies.
