Last season I ran with "Nobbly Nics" on the front and "Racing Ralphs" on the rear....

Sometimes I felt as though I lost traction on the rear..... But that might have been poor technique.

I ride XC mainly not a "Downhill nutter".

What tyres should I use this season?

In the last 12months I have gone from Fat Alberts --> Racing Ralphs --> Mountain King Supersonics.

The Racing Ralphs are an excellent compromise for XC speed and grip, but I also started to lack confidence in their grip levels. I'm still getting used to the Mountain Kings, but so far I think they achieve a good balance in comparison. Slightly less speed, slightly more grip.

It's always going to be a very personal choice, but so far, they are the best of the three sets that I've used.

I've just put a 2.2 Mountain King Supersonic on the front and I've been impressed by the grip and low weight. I'm going to look for something a bit tougher for the rear though.

In my opinion I find it ok to loose traction at the rear, as long as you have confidence in the front the rear will follow.
