The XK8's time is up :-( I'm a family man now and although the Jag's our 2nd car I need something that'll take a car seat(s) for those weekend's away.

So, i've got a budget of £20-25k. I'm thinking about either a 2000 XJR or a 2001 S-Type 4.2. The criteria are: it must be quick, prestigious and have enough space in the back and the boot for all the kid paraphernalia.

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts!

I agree. XJR every time.

Sorry to those S-Type owners out there
It's all IMHO of course.

Not related to this thread, but what did you think of your XK8?, was it reliable, fast etc.....

XJR or keep the XK8 and get the wife a bigger car - I did!

Or a horse box for the kids and toys etc.

Wacky - it's a fantastic car and i would thoroughly recommend it. It's very quick (you don't need the extra power of the XKR), beautiful, comfortable and well put together. BUT get one with a Jag warranty as things do occasionally go wrong and it can get very expensive. I reckon Jag have paid for £3-5k of work on my car.

XJR. Somewhat biased opinion but think it's a far better looking car. Plenty room for kids also.

OT, XJR or XKR which would you choose? IMHO think the XJR is far more sublte and more menacing looking...especially in black with warm charcoal leather.

Thanks for that I am considering a new one early in the new year, can't make my mind up between that and a Boxster....If I decide on the XK8 it would be a soft top

XJR. Roomier, quicker to accelerate, faster and amazingly far more economical.

Keep the XK8 as a second car and buy your fine lady a Previa.

When the children grow out of car seats they'll fit perfectly on the back row of an XK8.

XJR definitely - all these faux jags (s type, x type) are thinning the breed. Absolutely right about the warranty though: Jag's done around the same amount of work on my XJR.

I had an X type as a courtesy car while the XJR had some paintwork fixed (another XJ hit it in a carpark!) and felt that although it looked the part it was way way off the jag feeling. Revvy engine. Gutless. Noisy at speed. The long and the short of it is this - don't be fooled by the looks, real jags are about the driving experience and the s type (from what I've heard) and x type don't cut the mustard.

Thanks all for your thoughts. Looks like I'll be getting an XJR then!
Wifey's giving me the 'they look like an old mans car' routine, but what would she know...
So, anything i need to look out for on an XJR? I'll probably be buying from a Jag dealer so I'll assume they'll have checked it thoroughly. But were there any changes on the 99, 00 or 01 models - is one preferable to another? Any optionals worth having?
I'm already thinking 18" alloys and a heated screen (very useful on my XK)
And, while I'm at it, what colour? I don't really have time to give it a full buff every week so I'm thinking about platinum silver because it shouldn't show the dirt.
Again I'd appreciate the thoughts of all you lucky XJR owners out there..

Warranty - mine came with the remnants of the 4 year manufacturers warranty and its paid for itself many times over
Sat nav - standard after 1999 (mines a 1999 without sat nav!)
Boot protector - only £100 so get it thrown in at the start
Colour - mines red (as was the TVR, and most of my other past cars) so RED

Re. old mans car: that's exactly what my girlfriend said when she saw it in the shownroom so I took her out on the test drive. Press the "S" button near the gear lever and floor it... Old mans car my butt! She also drove it and when we got back to the dealer it was her that told the salesman we'd take it! She's 29 and I'm 33 so what's age got to do with it?

Note: I got the dealer (non Jag) to get Jag to inspect it and I told them that if Jag found anything wrong either they'd have t o pay or I'd walk away. Jag said it was fine so I laid out the dosh.

Best car I've ever had - honest.

How about an S Type R? I have no idea of prices for these so they may be out of your price bracket.

An off the wall idea. Perhaps a little short on prestigiousness (in fact I suppose it might be [rowanatkinsonstylee] prestigiousnessless [/rowanatkinsonstylee]) but a four seat alternative with a little fun and for the same money would be the new Mazda RX-8. The cunning rear doors would make getting child seats in and out v easy too.

Another quick question - can you get the walnut dash on XJR's? I don't much care for the black wood finish.

The black wood is Black Birds Eye Maple, far more exclusive and expensive than that common walnut
