Ford Galaxy turbo problem
Discussion
Please help ???!?!?!
I have been told my 2001 Ford Galaxy 1.9 TDI Ghia X, auto needs a new turbo charger and possible the 'pipes'.
Price quoted for the turbo is £1200 and for turbo and pipes £1800!!!!!
As the car is probabaly only worth £3500 (120k miles) I am reluctant to spend that much on it and even more importantly I cannot afford £1200 (credit crunch etc etc).
So does any know of a solution. I do know you have to be very careful with getting the right replacement turbo particularly for your car (matched to ECU etc). It does not make it easier the fact that this car has had a replacement engine (seller did not inform me - beware private sellers).
I live in the M25/J25 area and desperately need a solution as the summer holidays approach and we need the Galaxy to tow our caravan??!?!??!?!
My eternal thanks in anticipation - Paul

Seems a bit steep. Galaxy turbos are generally cheaper than alot of others due to the fact they fail quite alot - the more popular a part is the cheaper it generally becomes. Supply and demand etc. The 1.9TDi is a VW engine, so comes with the VW usual gremlins (turbo, injectors, AFM etc etc)
They're still quite pricey as they're part of the exhaust manifold, and there are different types. If you supply a chassis/reg number I can quote you the correct Ford price for them (as I work for a dealer)
Only way that price is right is if it's the new Galaxy with the PSA engines. They're still quiet fresh on the scene and parts are still pricey for them, but IIRC the 1.9 earlier shape models were around £800 for a new unit. Fitting would be an arse-ache without doubt though, access is s
te.

te.Ah, just noticed the replacement engine bit....you may need some I.D off the old turbo. Using your chassis or reg will only bring up what the car had fitted at the plant obviously.
Also read it properly and noticed it is indeed a VW unit. Those prices do look steep, but remember if you're using an indy garage, they may well be getting a price from Ford and then bumping a but more on it.

Ford dealer told my sis her turbo had failed and she needed a new one
Galaxy= very slow pick up and generally sluggish drive
after I had a brief search on the net turns out AFM can cause the above symptoms.
I obtained and Changed the AFM and it was like driving a new car definatly not the turbo.
way cheaper than a new turbo and proves dealers do not always diagnose faults properly.

If the turbo has in fact blown (normally its an oil supply problem which causes the shaft to sieze then snap) then the garage you have taken it to are right to say you will need pipes firstly i would never change a turbo without replacing the oil supply pipe but also if the turbo has blown its oil seal then you really do need to either replace all the boost hoses and intercooler, or spend a lot of time cleaning them out to make sure all the oil is out of them. The reason i say this is that being derv once the turbo is replaced if there is oil in the induction side of the system when you come to start the vehicle this will be sucked into the inlet and the engine will 'pick up' on the oil which means it will just rev until it blows or runs out of oil, either way it will most likley cause terminal problems with your engine and turbo.
Hi all, Sorry to jump in on this topic but I have a ford turbo problem also and I hope someone can help. I have a 1.8 2001 Ford Focus. Think it's the TDDI... Endura on the engine block. On motorway when smoke appeared, really thick... late night so not sure what colour. Checked under the bonnet and could see what looked like light oil spray from the big pipe which connects to the intercooler. Thought it was dripping oil onto the engine and making the smoke so nursed it off the motorway. Still loads of smoke. Oil level was OK and pressure seemed OK too. Stopped off the motorway to check again... this time when I started up the oil light flickered on and power seemed to drop so switched off the engine and got trailered home. When returned home... engine had cooled down and started OK with good oil pressure... enough to get it onto the drive. Engine sounded sweet with no expensive noises. Oil is dripping from the exhaust also. Doesn't sound terminal but not good of course... any help welcomed. Is this turbo seal failure? Can I drive it a short journey to a garage or can I diy it or is it specialistif it is the seals? cheers, Phil
