Driving along a main road today, I saw two police motorcyclists approaching, riding side by side with one hugging the centre white line. The twin headlights on both bikes were switched to high beam, thus dazzling on-coming drivers.

I wonder what their reaction would have been if I had driven towards them with foglights or fullbeam headlights on.

I realise bikers need to be seen but this is surely dangerous.

Dipped beams suffice to say, " I am here"

As a Police Motorcyclist i can only say that it must have been a mistake.
Headlights will suffice...no need for Main beam at all.

A couple of years ago i bought a new Sports Motorcycle and was amazed the first time that i took it out in the dark. I was following other cars and my Headlights were lighting ther roof of their car.

For the next couple of days i was constantly getting flashed and when i took it back to the bike shop i was told they were adjusted that way for safety etc etc.

I asked them to lower the beam to a more acceptable level.

Edited because i said main beam instead of Headlight

I have always wondered if bike riders "tweak" the dipped headlight on their bike so it is "less dipped"

I often wonder if personally imported bikes or "grey" imports still have their lights adjusted for RH dip.

ie you can't have LHD or RHD bikes as with cars but the headlight dip pattern could be something else?

Are you?? Excellent, I hadn't picked up on that at all and I do read your posts with great interest.

I've enjoyed all the training I've had with various biker trafpols, they all have a very "real world" view of roadcraft.

Tonyrec,

Thanks for that. You take care on those bike things. Last time I fell off one I was travelling at a huge speed; perhaps 2 mph on a slushy petrol station forecourt.
