Hi everyone, I wonder if you can help - hopefully a simple problem to solve....

I was driving my '99 Cerb the other day and whilst both indicators come on perfectly well, when I gave the stalk its second press to turn them off, nothing happened. This only affected the left hand indicator to start with so a quick double click on the right indicator saved me from going along with the indicator flashing away but the same gremlin has now affected the right hand indicators as well so I need to resolve the problem. Both indicators self cancel when going round corners so it just appears to be the indicator arm.....was just wondering if anyone else had encountered this and could point me in the most likely direction rather than we slowly removing various bits of the car unnecessarily.

Thanks,
Mike

Check to make sure the micro-switches are not being pressed once the switch moves back to the centre position.

Also try unplugging the control box and see if it resets itself.

For me, I just give it one flash of the hazzards and then the indicator will cancel. It's not a fix but it does the job as the problem is occasional. The bigger problem is that it does disract my attention from my driving which is not good at speed. TVR electrics - grrr.

There are 2 sensors down the steering column which detect when to cancel the indicators.
As far as I can remember, you'll find a disc and sensor located on the column, the sensor has a ribon going to it with steering wheel straight the gap in the ring should be in middle of sensor.

True, but these are working on the OPs car.

The indicators do self-cancel, it's the second press of the indicator stalk that's not working.

Hi everyone, thanks for the posts - as Ireland said, my indicators do self cancel it's just the second click that seems to be unhealthy......I'm yet to fully investigate but am kind of hoping for some poor connection somewhere.....pretty much everyone has said most electrical problems are due to a 'bad earth' so I'll see what I can find and report back. Thanks, Mike

When I got my Cerb it had been stood for 3 years. On traveling down the M6 the indicators would activate the Windscreen washers, Hazards and would not cancel. I found that the circuit board in the grey box above the steering column (sat on top of the air pipe) was corroded. I spray switch clearer over it to clean it up. Fixed it.
Hope this helps

Hi everyone,

Just a quickie to say thanks for all of the suggestions - finally found a few minutes this weekend to have a look at her and decided to have a go at the easiest option possible......retract the leather stalk surround, spray a load of WD40 in/on/around the contacts, waggle the lever up and down a few times and hey presto, all back as good as new!

Thanks again,
Mike

Dont you just love free and simple repairs like this! It almost makes up for the huge complicated and expensive ones! (i did say almost) But the great thing is that all the people who have put up whith this problem for ages are most probably going to go out armed whith WD and put there's right this weekend and all thanx to your last post! This is what this forum is all about! smile
