I'm trying to decide whether to buy an A4 2.5 TDI or a 1.9 TDI 130. (Think the 100 might be a bit sluggish).
Both are 03 plates with 80,000 and are manual (This forum has put me off Audi Auto) -are about £6000. Any one have advice to offer on which way to go or have a view on either car?
thank

Someone else asked a similar question about an A6 the other day - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I think 1.9 TDI 130 is best bet for an A4, very good engine if a little unrefined. If you find it too slow you could always remap.

Both are a bit rough and unrefined.

1.9 is slightly underpowered, but not perhaps as bad as you might think. They are however virtually bullet proof, very few problems with them, occasional turbo failures and Air Mas meters but no more than any other TD car.

2.5 has a nice amount of power and good torque spread. But they are prone to expensive failures. Pumps are common £1000+. Turbo's (more common than 1.9) £1000+. Oil breather system issues causing major oil leaks and the Cam belt and drive belt replacement is a much bigger job, more expensive.

So in short the 2.5 is a nicer car to drive, but ultimately over a period of time, if you are doing any significant millage, the 1.9 is the better car to own.

Over on Briskoda, the consensus is with the 1.9 for much the same reasons as already been stated. Also, the PD130 responds to remaps very well...

you never mentioned, which variant of the 2.5 engine is it?
i owned an 03 plate 2.5tdi quattro sport 180 which when wanting to hoon was a good car to drive. not that economic but not that bad either. had a tendency to understeer when really pushed, but had phenomenal grip (even compared to my previous 3 quattros), returned me a regular 38mpg regardless of how it was driven. I was never stung with big bills for it, but i know a few other owners who have been. That prayed on my mind so it went in March.

The 130pd lump with a remap is very hard to contend with, reliable, economic and quick, ticks all the boxes really. Its not that the 2.5 is a bad engine, its that the 130pd is a very good engine. However driving style the 2.5 is nice and lazy, personally i like the power delivery of Audis Vee's. Try them both!

Well thanks for your valuable advice gentlemen - a 1.9 it is then - would you agree that the 130 is the way to go rather than the 100??

Yes deffinetely. The 100 isn't enough power for a car that size, and I think it only has a 5-speed gearbox rather than the 6-speed of the 130.

I had a 130 TDI 6 speed for about 6 months from work..
Very nice car..Not good around roundabouts very nose heavy..

It is fast from about 50 + all the way past the legal limit, if you are on a track..

The 6 speed is very good combination and was fitted all over the VAG network not in audi form thou, something to do with the injectors..

Did sound course under pressure of the right foot, but I would defo go for this even thou never tried a 2.5 v6, just because it is more simpler.and even thou the devils fuel, was fun to boot on overtaking and motorways with effectless speed.

In the A6 the 1.9TDi is only a little rough when you absolutely cane it, but even then its a fairly remote feeling of being rough.

Joe my time has come.

I have a b6 2001 reg a4 1.9tdi sport and it is simply excellent. For ages and ages i have wanted to replace it with an s4 b6 but cannot justify it for one reason...

It never goes wrong. Mine is on 224000 miles and has only outside normal items needed a new clutch release bearing and therefore clutch and rear anti roll bar that i can remember.

things to look out for are well the rear anti roll bar. Badly designed . It has two plastic sheaths which the clamps that hold it in place go over but the plastic perishes meaning a new anti roll bar +- 200 to 250. Also the windscreen wipers are a known failure the bearings tend to seize.

I believe they cost about 170 to replace or if you have the skills or a friendly indy they can be refurbed mine were done for about 80 quid. Mine failed about 4 months ago so lasted a fair while.

Headlight bulbs are a bit of a bugger to get to until you suss the system at which point it takes about ten minutes a bulb.
Very quiet and comfy at motorway speeds fairly good road holding. Standard cd stereo is pretty good with a sub built into parcel shelf. A tank of fuel should see you good for 600+miles. ALso not sure if standard or not but if you can get the optional leccy lumbar support it makes the car more comfy.

Will happily cruise at 150kph for hrs on end. Also beware the sport version has a tendency to smack its nose on the ground very easily if going over speed bumps too fast. Glove box when opened should drop slowly as its on a gas/hydrolic style hinge which if broken could prove expensive/tricky to repair.

Cant think of anything else right now any questions just ask.

Mine must have the sport suspension, as I have that issue with the nose scraping the ground. Its a horrible feeling ....

Only issue i have with the car really. I ran a 156 selespeed as a weekender for a bit and it was a lot more sporty looking low and sleek but was much happier with speed humps than my a4. However i have developed a technique to get around the problem. Slow for speed bump then as your front wheels are on top of the hump accelerate lifting the nose meaning faster progress without stuffing the nose into the ground on the opposite side.

Only other option is a mod to the suspension but cant be arsed replacing something that aint broke.

Well I have a remapped 130PD, to 170/290, it's quick when it needs to be and I am averaging 50.4mpg at the moment.
