Yesterday I bought 99 Ron petrol from a supermarket as normal unleaded was not available for a 180 mile trip. My average mileage in one trip rose 1.8mpg (several thousand mile average) and I got 27.6mpg for the trip which is 3-4mpg at least more than normal.

Given this, is 99 Ron responsible for this, my driving was slightly slower due to traffic but I was really surprised....

I use the 99 ron stuff most of the time ( nice roads on the run through to Tescos) . I've had the computer register 34 mpg for trip to the Cotswolds but usually see 27/28 mpg on longer runs. Superunleaded is claimed to increase mpg.

The S54 engine is designed to run on 98 RON so when you use normal unleaded (95 RON) you get a drop in power and performance. It may only be slight, but you bought an M-car for a reason, so may as well spend the extra 5p per litre of fuel wink

I only ever use Tesco 99 or Shell V Power, nearly ran out of petrol getting to Tesco's last night passing several garages on the way. Had a range of 7 miles at the end smile

I only ever use Tesco 99 too. I hate the way it feels on normal Adsa fuel. Well worth the extra 5p.

Oh, yes! You've never lived until you're 0 miles to go [on an autobahn, doing 159 used the fuel quicker than I expected] and the nearest garage is 7 miles away!!!

ETA it actually shows _ _ _ rather than '0'

So it does work then?

I thought it was all just marketing bks... smile

I didn't realise the 3.2 M engine was supposed to run on super. Might just have to start using it!

It certainly works Steve. Wouldn't run mine on anything other than SUL.

The give away is the sticker inside the fuel filler cap on the M3.

Going to give it a go for a month or so and see the difference. Just 99 Ron though or similar smile Funny enough, didn't notice much difference in performance, just felt like the M had a bit more torque lower down if that makes sense...

Thorney Motorsport did a study of UL versus SUL fuels - using BMWs and top of the range Vauhalls - gave more power and MPG - see their website.

I've only ever put 95RON in when I had no choice (M3 CSL, E90 M3), and always thought they drove like real dogs with it. Super should make a big difference to driveability.

Careful what you post!! Banus/Mike will probably be along shortly to tell you that your car is untouchable 2nd-hand now, and that irrecoverable engine damage has been carried out by not running it on the fuel mixture BMW recommend....

hehe
