Insurance on my Dad's car..
Discussion
Hi all,
Yesterday my dad said that I could get insured on his Chesil speedster as a first car if possible
I recon that I would only get insured after I've passed my test and done pass plus.
Can anyone recommend somewhere that might take me on. He is currently with Adrian Flux.
Would it be a good idea to do some driving courses after I pass to bring down the insurance?
Thanks in advance,
George

My first car was a kit. I insured it at 19 for for a couple of hundred quid. That was in 2002, so not that long ago.
Unfortunately things do seem to have changed since then. The company I insure my current toy with has just upped its minimum age to 30. Fortunately as an existing customer I'm allowed to stay on.
In short: It's going to be tricky, or perhaps simply impossible, but definitely worth a shot. Try googling 'kit car insurance' or something to that effect and just phoning every specialist that comes up. Needless to say I wouldn't bother with the mainstream people, you'll only get as far as "What's a Chesil Speedster?".
Good luck.

Thanks guys
I'll have a good search and see what I can come up with..
I've still got till August till I can start driving.. I at least want the coolest first car
Not sure whether I could just get a quote for it as a beetle as that is what it is registered as then just ask them how much more it would be and ask why

You've got two major problems there i'm afraid, i would sort the registration issue out first as come any claim time you might have some real issues. The V5 should say chesil speedster not beetle.

Are you just looking at the proposed Chesil, or do you already own it? (I'm assuming the former)
If it is listed as a Beetle on the V5, then I'd look elsewhere, or you may find yourself incurring a load of hastle and possibly cost if you have to get the car inspected to get the documentation right. (As James has said above)
Regarding insurance companies - as others have suggested better to talk to the specialist insurers as they will be far more knowledgable about cars like these.
Chesil as a first car at 17? Ultimate in cool.

ETA: One possibility might be to get yourself into a Beetle at 17 - easy to fix and maintain, and buttons to run, and cool in a quirky way. Then once you have been on the road a bit and insurance costs come down you *could* convert your Beetle into a Chesil, as now that Peter Bailey has bought Chesil back from Tygan, self-builds are back on the agenda.
One sticking point though may be that original Beetles are becoming rather expensive. I have one currently in a (very slow) process of restoration, and it has increased in value hugely over the last few years just by sitting SORN'ed in a garage!

My dad has already got the car, so I won't be doing the converting! I just finished re-building his caterham, so that's enough building for a while...
If I can't get insured on the chesil I will be insured on a new mini, which isn't bad, but the chesil is soooo much cooler!
I will try giving some insurance companies a call later

I will be a named driver, but I won't be in practise the main driver as I go to bording school and won't have a cance to use it too often..
I just got a qoute for £1500, fully comp, which seems alright. I recon I can match the difference between insurance on the mini and the Speedster

I see you state that the car is insured with us (Adrian Flux)
Can I ask how old you are please? If you are under 25 we would not be able to put you on as a named driver. our Insurers that we use do not have Parent / Child Policies.
If you would like me to look further into this for you then please PM me your Dad's and your details including postcode and I'll see what I can do to help.
Dan.
Dan, Thanks for the comment. I'm going to be 17 when I think about getting insured on the car, so if you can't insure me that is no problem
If there is any chance that I could get insured for under £2000 with Adrian Flux, I would snap it up
The £1500 quote was with footmanjames online...
Cheers,
George

Shows how things have changed. Admittedly I was slightly older, but still in my teens when I had the Quantum and my first premium was £300 a year and it dropped to £180 for the renewal (when I went onto a club scheme).
Still, I suppose you have to bear in mind a mainstream insurer would probably charge you getting on for £1,500 on a 1.4 supermini, suddenly it doesn't sound quite so bad.

Big thread revival I know, but I thought I would raise this as opinions on this would be interesting.
I passed my driving test in December and am driving a Mini One (see my profile). I'd still like to try to get insured on my dad's Chesil Speedster, probably when I'm 18 as the price will go down then (I'm 18 in August).
Which companies should I be contacting to get a quote (who is kind enough to insure an 18 year old?) and what tips and tricks should I know to get the best deal?
The Speedster is currently insured with Adrian Flux - do you think that will they insure me?
As usual, your help is much appreciated!

Don't mean to be funny but why not just ask Adrian Flux.. it's no use us sticking our fingers in the air and getting your hopes up, or on the other hand, shooting them down by guessing.
Ring them and find out!
I can say that I'm 19 and insured with Adrian Flux on my GTM Libra. So have a go and let us know how you get on.

I was more just wondering if anyone has had any much better experience using other companies...Ring them and find out!
